Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of structural inspections related to all residential and commercial construction in the built environment throughout St. Joseph County.

Schedule: Mon-Fri 7:30am-4pm

Salary $50,000-53,000

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Inspection Duties:
  • Inspect residential, commercial, and manufacturing structures for compliance with State Building codes
  • Ability to read blueprints and drawings.
  • Resolve minor and moderately complex problems encountered in the day-to-day inspection of housing.
  • Explain Building Codes to architects, engineers, contactors and the public.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and maintain daily mileage and inspection logs.
  • Coordinate with other inspectors to schedule group and/or final inspections
  • Ability to take and pass an ICC Residential Inspector Certification test within 2 years of hire.
  • On call evenings and weekends for special projects, e.g. Rebuilding Together, Habitat for Humanities, and for emergencies, e.g. natural disasters.
  • Assist other inspectors when needed

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four years of experience in construction, construction management, or code administration and enforcement.
  • Preferred associate degree or bachelors degree in construction management, civil engineering architecture, legal studies, or other applied sciences

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Understanding of City of South Bend Municipal Code, St. Joseph County Code of Ordinances, State of Indiana law, and applicable federal laws.
