Amentum Hazardous Waste Operator in Silverdale, Washington
Summary/General Description Of Job:
The Hazardous Material and Waste Operator identifies, removes, packs, transports, or disposes of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, radioactive materials, or contaminated soil.
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
§ Serves as team lead for Waste Retention and Transfer (WRT) and performs all the duties associated with the collection, consolidation, retention, transfer, and transporting of hazardous and regulated substances.
§ Responsible for QC checks on various paperwork.
§ Duties may include operating the Oily Waste Retention and Transfer Station; performing cargo tank transfers; cleaning retention tanks and mobile tankers; and consolidation and inventory of hazardous wastes, including asbestos, lead, and mold.
§ Assists Requestors with sampling as required.
§ May assist in the day to day operation of the IWTP.
§ Performs treatments of hazardous waste and operates solvent recovery still.
§ Responsible for consolidation, marking, labeling, and tracking hazardous waste.
§ Performs mechanical maintenance tasks.
§ Operates laboratory test equipment and gas detection instruments.
§ As a Hazardous Substance Spill Response Team Leader, or an alternate team leader, makes informed decisions concerning the technical operations of the Spill Response Team under routine and emergency situations.
§ Works closely with the on-scene coordinator (may be from other organizations) to assess a spill situation, determine a course of action, and coordinate support services; is on call for hazardous substance spill control, containment, and cleanup, including providing backup for the Fire Department, as required.
§ As needed, functions in LEVEL A Protection, uses analytical instruments for testing hazardous conditions, and sets up and operates various compressors, pumps, valves, and fittings.
§ Operates five-ton trucks, cargo tanker trucks, forklifts, and various communication systems.
§ Periodically, the Hazardous Waste Operator may be rotated between assignments at WRT, IWTP, Bremerton Naval Hospital, PSNS, Naval Station Bremerton and other locations.
§ Performs other related duties as assigned.
May perform work in other classifications when incidental work is necessary to the accomplishment of the work assignment. Significant work in another job classification may be required if accompanied by any wage adjustments applicable.

Job Requirements (Education, Experience, Professional Associations):
Mandatory
• High School education or equivalent.
• Must be experienced in hazardous waste operations.
• Must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a hazardous material handler or equivalent.
• Has knowledge of spill response procedures and techniques, general chemistry principles, emergency dispatching procedures, and safety and first aid procedures.
• Can use portable and land-based radio communication systems; SCBA, full face respirator, and safety equipment; analytical testing equipment; pumps and compressors; cargo tanker trucks; five-ton trucks; and forklifts.
• Must be able to follow written and oral instructions in dealing with toxic chemicals and operating under hazardous conditions.
• Knowledge of Navy hazardous substance regulations and procedures preferred.
• Must be able to make informed decisions concerning the technical operations of the Spill Response Team under routine and emergency situations.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State class “B” commercial driver’s license with a (X) Hazardous/Tank endorsement as a minimum within 6 months of assignment.
• Must be medically qualified in accordance with company and governmental regulations.
• Must meet and maintain company physical and security requirements, including respirator qualification, and clearance eligibility when required.
• Must possess good communication skills for a service team environment.
Must pass a pre-employment physical examination qualifying the employee for various training and use of SCBA, air-purifying respirators, asbestos handling, CDL requirements, and handling of 55-gallon drums. Must be able to lift 50lbs. Must pass an annual medical examination, which may include screens for toxic and heavy metals exposure.
• Specific Training Required :
• The following training must be completed before assignment to the position:40 hours Hazardous Waste Facility Operations; SCBA Training; Respirator Training; CPR/First Aid Training. The following training must be obtained within 6 months after assignment to the position: 40 hours Spill Response Training; Fire Extinguisher Training; Forklift Operation; SWFPAC General Explosive Safety Training; DOT Hazardous Material Training; Confined Space; CDL A (X) Endorsement.
• In addition, must meet all applicable training requirements specified in or added to SUBASEBANGORINST 5100.7B, Industrial and Hazardous Waste Disposal Manual, or any other Navy instruction referenced in the contract, or in written Company policy.
• Ability to successfully pass any background checks and/or drug testing required on the contract.
• U.S. Citizenship.
Wages -$33.62 per hr
