Minimum Qualifications
The Assistant Dean of Students fosters student success by promoting a campus climate of civility, integrity, and responsibility. The Assistant Dean actively promotes LSUS’ Commitment to Community and reducing barriers/disruptions to student success through overseeing case management and services related to community standards. Additionally, the Assistant Dean serves as the university's chief conduct officer and is responsible for assisting students in navigating the accountability process to ensure prompt, impartial, and equitable implementation of the Code of Student Conduct and other University policies. The Assistant Dean has supervisory responsibility for the Coordinator for Access & Advocacy and the SAVE Project Director. The Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Dean of Students.
Responsibilities and Duties
Interprets and informs the university community regarding policies and procedures related to academic integrity and community standards; serves as a campus resource, ensures that selected policies, procedures, and programs are communicated; answers questions and/or refers employees and students to appropriate resources; compiles a variety of reports; counsels students regarding strategies for problem solving; promotes the University’s Commitment to Community by encouraging high academic and social standards
Co-leads the University’s CARE and Threat Assessment Teams to support the safety and overall well-being of the university community; ensures a proactive and collaborative approach to provide interventions for students of concern, coordinating data collection to inform interventions, assigning students caseloads in Maxient, and ensures follow-through with students
Manages campus communications regarding campus community standards, including, academic integrity, hazing, and alcohol & other drugs; oversees development and delivery of culturally responsive educational programs for students, including incoming students, educational materials, and overseeing outreach and training; leads the development & implementation of the University student surveys pertaining to alcohol & other drug use; chairs the Drug & Alcohol Task Force and coordinates the compilation of the University’s Biennial Review
Oversees the University’s SAVE Program, an Office on Violence Against Women Campus Program Grant; supervises the grant’s program manager; participates on the Coordinated Community Response Team; attends all required trainings; responsible for ensuring the development and implementation of the grant’s component requirements for student conduct
Serves as the university’s conduct officer; develops and implements the university’s student accountability procedures in theCode of Student Conduct for individual students and student organizations,ensuring due process and fairness for all parties; trains and advises the University Hearing Panel; adjudicates academic and behavioral misconduct allegations; mediates disputes involving students as appropriate; advises students and faculty regarding accountability matters; monitors accountability case timelines and follow-ups
Interfaces with University legal counsel regarding student conduct matters; monitors theCode for compliance with state and federal law; maintains student disciplinary records within Maxient
Keeps abreast of trends in student conduct issues, as well as state and federal legislation case law impacting behavioral misconduct and academic integrity issues
Implements the Student Navigators program (program design, recruitment, training & oversight), students who assist the Dean of Students Office in promoting advocacy, leadership, and education regarding the tenets of our Commitment to Community, providing resources/information to the student community regarding the Accountability Process and the SHARE Center; ensures Student Navigators complete Certified Peer Educator training
Provides supervision to the Coordinator for Access & Advocacy, assisting the university in reducing barriers to and addressing disruptions in the student experience
Assists the Dean of Students with campus and student communications, such as the Student Handbook, annual notification, and creating reports reflecting the work of the Dean of Students Office
Qualifications
Master’s degree is preferred, with a concentration in student personnel services, higher education, student affairs administration, or a related discipline with administrative management experience preferred. Experience in university student conduct administration, policy interpretation, data gathering and analysis, or complaint investigations required.
