POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs. It is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling more than 21,000 students at its three campuses in Selden, Brentwood, and Riverhead, as well as a Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center in Riverhead.

Suffolk County Community College is searching for a full-time 12-month Biology Professional Assistant (PA). SUNY Suffolk is a comprehensive community college committed to open access, equity, and student success,

Responsibilities:

  • Technical assistance for biology labs, most notably microscopes.

  • Manage inventory of all BIO, MAR and ENV supplies/equipment.

  • Purchase supplies/equipment for all BIO, MAR and ENV labs.

  • Maintain SDS files.

  • Perform routine safety tests where necessary.

  • Arrange for repair/maintenance of equipment.

  • Arrange for biological (specimen) waste pick up.

  • Order/Distribute live specimens in a timely manner.

  • Train, assist adjunct PAs.

  • Keep PA manuals up to date.

  • Make routine, (minimum weekly), trips to all four Biology lab buildings with supplies, live specimens, etc.

  • Help to resolve equipment, supply and personnel issues in Sag, MA, Paumanok and STEM.

  • Responsible for routine equipment maintenance.

  • Handle biological specimens and microorganisms.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or in a related field.

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ lab experience in a Biology, Microbiology, Marine or Environmental Science lab.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lab experience in a college setting.

    HIRING SALARY:

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the college.
