What You'll Do

 

YWCA Seattle|King|Snohomish, one of the largest nonprofits in the region, focuses on the needs of women, girls, and families in the community, is searching for a Teen Peer Gender Based Violence Community Advocate *to join their team in the *Seattle/South King County, WA area.

 

The Teen Peer Advocate will be working with children and youth aged 12 to 18 years. We will engage Black and African American youth in violence prevention, peer advocacy, and empowerment. The multi-layered context of generational trauma, especially within Black/African American communities, calls for a culturally specific and community base prevention approach that begins with education and empowerment of Black/African American teens. Advocacy services include engaging in peer-to-peer outreach, program planning, and meeting coordination at assigned high schools.

 

Note: This position is fully onsite at YWCA Offices.

Expectations of your role:

[Teen Advocacy]{.underline}

Provide culturally relevant advocacy with trauma informed approach to the Teen (ages 12+) of survivors of gender-based violence, fleeing imminent danger.

Work alongside YWCA's Housing Advocates to ensure teens have access to available youth services (i.e., high school personnel, McKinney Vento and Child Protective Services)

Support parents and teens in learning strategies for staying safe and developing individual safety plans.

Develop an ongoing network of resources for teens with coordinated referrals to link to youth and families.

Attending Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and Children Protective Services (CPS) case meetings for relevant families.

Co-facilitate support groups through Healing Circles for youth and teens.

Maintains accurate client files/spreadsheet, complete INFONET, timely data collection and monthly reporting including narrative writing. 

[Community and School Outreach]{.underline}

Utilizing an established curriculum, facilitate and lead weekly training with teen students.

Prepare students for teen peer activities through consistent engagement.

Manage relationships for the McKinney-Vento liaison program with select Public Schools (currently working with 2 high schools, and actively adding additional schools)

Facilitate workshops and activities that engage Black/African American youth in developing a deeper understanding of the interplay between race, gender, and violence.

Facilitate and hold space for meaningful peer connections and collective learning, healing, and action.

Consistent follow through and maintain direct positive connection with key school decision makers.

Prepares students to participate in required program participation activities.

For community outreach will work in partnership with the Washington Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF), Community Centers, and Local public schools (within Seattle and King County).
