UW Medicine Human Resources has an outstanding full time opportunity for an EEO Workplace Complaint Investigator based at Harborview Medical Center. The EEO Workplace Complaint Investigator reports directly to the UW Medicine Employee Relations Manager at Harborview Medical Center and partners closely with the UW Medicine Employee Relations Director and the HR Consultant Teams.

Role of EEO Workplace Complaint Investigator

As a part of the UW Medicine Employee Relations Team, the EEO Workplace Complaint Investigator is assigned initial intake and follow up investigatory work on reports that come into the UW Medicine Bias Reporting Tool. This position acts as a neutral, objective factfinder who investigates internal complaints as assigned, at Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center – Montlake and Northwest campuses; along with FPPS, UWNC and ALNW. Scope of work includes complaints alleging:

  • Violations of UW Medicine Professional Conduct Policy; and/or the UW Medicine Service Culture Guidelines.

  • Unethical practice/Neglect of duty.

  • Discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in the workplace when allegations implicate the University’s violations of the UW Medicine Professional Conduct Policy; and/or the UW Medicine Service Culture Guidelines.

  • Other Employee Relations investigations as needed.Upon completion of investigation, the EEO Workplace Complaint Investigator completes a Workplace Investigation Report that outlines summary of the event(s), findings/conclusions and recommended next steps, and reports out on investigatory findings and recommendations. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Initial intake and follow up investigatory work on reports that come into the UW Medicine Bias Reporting Tool, as assigned by the UW Medicine Bias Response Team.

  • Investigates internal workplace complaints, including those alleging micro-aggressions against marginalized groups, unconscious or institutional bias and violations of UW non-discrimination and retaliation policies.

  • Authors and disseminates, as appropriate, workplace investigation reports that include factual determinations, analysis, and recommendations.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.

  • Collaborates with UW Medicine leaders, Human Resources Consultants, EDI Directors, Assistant Attorneys General, and administrative personnel in handling complaints and related issues, as appropriate.

  • May participate in multi-disciplinary discussions to devise and refine appropriate and creative approaches to dispute resolution.

  • If appropriate, partner with Employee Relation Director and HR Consultants to recommend effective and appropriate corrective action measures.

  • May recommend and/or participate in trainings to address gaps in an individual’s or workgroup’s cultural competency or cultural inclusivity. REQUIREMENTS: The most successful candidate will have a career that reflects a deep working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations related to compliance with nondiscrimination laws, and proven experience conducting complex HR Investigations and Employee Relations work. Typically, candidates are qualified to perform the responsibilities of this position by obtaining expertise and knowledge through the attainment of a bachelor’s degree, and at least 4 years of HR Investigations experience. However, we acknowledge there are other career paths in which a candidate may gain the expertise and ability to perform this work. Education, experience, and training that demonstrates proficiency and the ability to perform the job responsibilities will be evaluated for equivalency to the required education and experience qualifications listed below.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.

  • Four years of experience conducting complex HR investigations and Employee Relations work, or ability to demonstrate proficiency and expertise in objective fact gathering, high level of organization and prioritization, information synthesis and analysis, exceptional interpersonal communication, and ability to meet deadlines.

  • Deep working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations related to compliance with nondiscrimination laws, including but not limited to: Title IX, Title VII, the WLAD, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including: the ability to both be impartial and project impartiality, and the ability to establish rapport with a diverse range of community members.

  • Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges.

  • Ability to manage issues of complexity and extreme sensitivity with a high level of diplomacy, integrity, honesty, and respect.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and plan one’s work to meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare written reports and provide reliable testimony explaining the investigation’s process, findings, conclusions, and rationales.

  • Consistent and reliable method of transportation. Travel between work locations as needed is a requirement of this position. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED:

  • Professional experience in unionized environments.
