The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Paper Science Laboratory Manager who will oversee the laboratory which supports the Bio-resource Science and Engineering Program.

The University of Washington Bioresource Science and Engineering (BSE) program is a world leader in education and research in the production of fuels, chemicals, and products from biomass. To support this mission, we have comprehensive pilot and laboratory facilities. These facilities include extensive pulp and paper unit operations and more recent additions to support research and instruction in production of biofuels, biobased chemicals and nano materials. The laboratory manager manages these facilities, supports laboratory class instruction, and supervises contract research and technical service work that is carried out in the laboratory.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Facilities management - maintain and manage laboratory equipment and infrastructure. (50%)

  • Service specialized pulp and paper equipment, such as the pilot paper machine and pilot pulp digesters, such that they operate smoothly and safely. Document equipment service work to ensure compliance with EH&S maintenance requirements.

  • Compose and maintain SOPs for equipment in the laboratory.

  • Maintain and periodically review service contracts with outside companies that service critical infrastructure, such as the laboratory deionized water system. Negotiate terms of the contract when the contracts need to be reviewed.

  • Work with University of Washington facilities personnel to ensure infrastructure services such as air handling, high and low pressure steam lines, and high-voltage lines are working properly and providing utilities that are needed for the laboratory.

  • Research and purchase new equipment when necessary to keep the laboratory up-to-date and well-equipped to support BSE teaching and research programs.

  • Periodically review laboratory equipment layout and organization to maximize the efficiency and use of the laboratory. Work with BSE faculty to ensure laboratory equipment is located and configured correctly for teaching and research purposes.

  • Maintain up to date inventory of materials and chemicals to be used for the BSE teaching and research. Purchase chemicals as needed to maintain inventory.

  • Maintain complete records of chemical inventories and SOPs for hazardous chemical usage.

  • Manage EH&S inspection requirements such that the laboratory maintains a high safety rating.

  • Support BSE laboratory instruction by facilitating operation of pilot scale equipment and preparation of specialty materials that are used in the laboratory courses.Fiscal management and administration. (25%)

  • Maintain detailed records of laboratory expenditures and budgets. Ensure that none of the laboratory budgets goes into a deficit.

  • Complete quarterly projections of laboratory finances and present that to BSE faculty at appropriate faculty meetings.

  • Develop fee structure for contract service work in the laboratory. Work with University financial experts to ensure that the fee structure is consistent with University policy and Washington State laws.

  • Negotiate scope of work, fee structures, and payment terms with potential clients that wish to do contract service work in the laboratory.

  • Invoice clients for contract service work and work with SEFS financial team with regard to billing and payment such that the funds are received in a timely fashion and placed in the correct budgets.

  • Hire undergraduate student helpers as needed to support work for large service contracts.Contract service work. (25%)

  • Negotiate with service work clients, the scope of work, project timing, and cost of the project.

  • Work with clients to develop an appropriate experimental design and modify that design if preliminary work suggests changes are required.

  • Carry out the pilot scale runs, or experimental work, that is outlined in the scope of work and negotiated with the client. Lead undergraduate student helpers that may be required for larger projects that cannot be carried out by the laboratory manager alone.

  • Draft reports to clients detailing the work that was done, pertinent results, conclusions, and suggestions for future work.

  • Develop marketing materials for the laboratory services. This includes brochures, presentation materials, and maintaining the service laboratory webpage. Work with the WPPF Executive Director to develop an overall marketing plan. Visit potential customers as needed to market laboratory capabilities. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in paper science, chemical engineering, or equivalent and 2 years of work experience with pulp and paper processes, or equivalent processes, and testing techniques.

  • An equivalent combination of work experience with pulp and paper processes and education may satisfy the degree requirements. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Maintenance and/or construction experience/skills necessary to perform or coordinate maintenance of the paper lab facilities and equipment.

  • Strength, flexibility and dexterity to fit up to 3” diameter pipe, pumps and associated equipment. Lift, move and position equipment and materials of 50-75 pounds.

  • Experience in providing instruction in use of equipment

  • Experience with implementation and enforcement of safety protocols

  • Experience managing a laboratory or similar service including budget management DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities

  • Ability to multi-task, and maintain laboratory in professional manner

  • Ability to work independently within a multi-disciplinary and multi-user research and teaching environment
