POSITION PURPOSE The Ops Specialist assists the IPD Senior Lab Manager with managing two (2) laboratories (Baker and King) located in the MolES / NanoES building, Benjamin Hall, HSB J-Wing, and SLU S Building. This includes a robust Core R&D Lab group housed within the IPD. The Ops Specialist assists the IPD Senior Lab Manager with lab management for a combined 280 FTE staff of staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and undergraduate student helpers. Duties include managing lab space, inventory and supervision of laboratory support staff / undergraduate support aids. The Ops Specialist works closely with the IPD Senior Lab Manager to keep the lab space organized and stocked in addition to working closely with scientific and administrative staff in the Department of Biochemistry and Institute for Protein Design. This role will also be involved in the orientation of all new lab members as another source of information about lab practice, etiquette and chemical safety. Other duties include maintenance of chemical inventory and instruments, organization of back stock inventory and allocation of wet-lab resources.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Main duties will include those described below, which will be carried out during normal working hours.

  • Familiarity with office productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to prepare research reports on the work performed.

  • The IPD Lab Manager must be proficient with sterile laboratory maintenance and familiar with BSL1 and BSL2 requirements.This role will provide management support for IPD sites: MolES, NanoES, Ben Hall, HSB J-Wing, and SLU S Building. This will include working with vendors on all supplies, equipment, and service needs

  • 30% of effort will be dedicated to tracking & ordering inventory, and anticipating & avoiding supply shortcomings/backordering.

  • The IPD Lab Manager will be responsible for ensuring proper reagent stocks and consumables are available.

  • Anticipating and ordering acceptable alternatives for backordered/unavailable items as needed.

  • Monitoring and updates for reagent orders for lab members.20% of effort will be dedicated to answering tickets via the lab management ticket system for various members of the IPD

  • Grant access to instrument calendars, lab sequencing and synthesis accounts.

  • Serves as a resource to connect lab members to institutional knowledge or other staff for support.

  • Advises on basic safety questions or escalates as needed.15% of effort will be dedicated to supervising the daily activities of 10 undergraduate support staff

  • Assist in the hiring and training of a new lab support staff.

  • Daily supervision and assignment of tasks.

  • Maintains and updates standard operating procedures book.10% of effort will be dedicated to coordinating lab space usage

  • Ensuring that cold storage & common-use spaces are organized & maintained, while working with other laboratory stakeholders to ensure good laboratory citizenship.15% of effort will be dedicated to large equipment maintenance management (e.g. service contracts) and distributed collaborative support among other stakeholders in the lab

  • Negotiation with biotech companies (with help from other lab members) with prices for services and equipment.

  • This role includes direct responsibility for large equipment maintenance management (e.g. service contracts) and distributed collaborative support among other stakeholders in the lab.10% of effort will be dedicated to orientation of new lab members

  • Requests for new user accounts, coordination of safety training, onboarding activities.Lead Responsibilities

  • Complex negotiation and oversight of large buy and hold vendor contracts, oversight of supply chain management, direct oversight of multiple lab spaces.Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervision of undergraduate student assistants, indirect supervision of entry level Lab Tech I and II – daily supervision and assignment of tasks, performance management. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering or similar + 2 years of experience as a lead. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in a leadership role, with 2 years of prior laboratory research experience.

  • Mechanically inclined and willing to learn about large instrument function and maintenance.

  • Previous experience with lab management in a wet-lab setting.
