Job Summary

This position requires a high level of independence necessary to investigate, gather information, and adjust personal and commercial automobile and/or property losses. This is a multi-state position which will require developing a proficiency in interpreting, understanding and applying multiple policies and multi-jurisdictional claim handling requirements.

In handling homeowner and commercial property losses, the individual will be responsible to maintain and control first and third party structural and contents losses through to a timely conclusion. The individual will also be responsible for individual investigation task referrals requiring outside activity as requested by in-house personnel. Complete accurate and timely appraisals and valuations, supplements, and if applicable, make payments in the field as appropriate. Maintain a professional image while adhering to company and state regulated guidelines as they pertain to the damage assessment and claim settlement process. Frequent oral communication with customers is required and must be timely and professional. Remain informed of territorial labor rates, repair techniques, building and construction design, industry trends and applicable state laws. Negotiate with customers, contractors, or representatives for proper repairs in a safe and cost effective manner with a high level of integrity. This individual will provide file notes and written communications indicating the current status of files on the applicable system; interpret applicable policies and endorsements; apply technical knowledge to assigned losses; make prompt and accurate technical decisions and prioritize multiple tasks. The individual may also participate in the training of other claims personnel.

Develops and maintains a working relationship with those in the industry and provides technical support. Attend periodic meetings and industry training in order to keep current on issues of auto and property repair. May need to be available for overnight travel to handle field losses, field visits and re-inspections of staff and independent appraisal firms, and/or Catastrophe Duty. Travel and field work may occur during both business and non-business hours, including weekdays and weekends. The position may have a review/auditing component comprising review of incoming damage assessments and/or reports from Independent Adjusters, 3rd Party Adverse Subrogation Demands or insureds, support ePic Program, assigned tasks in support of the MAPFRE Select Home Restoration Program and other MAPFRE Property Department programs. Review work may be based in a Claim Center location determined by company need. The individual may be required to perform duties in support of other Property Department, Claim Department or other functional areas based on company needs. Performs other functions assigned to the position as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education: Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent, related experience.

Experience: 4 - 6 years - or Associates Degree equivalent plus 6 - 8 years.

Knowledge: General knowledge of industry practices, standards, and concepts within field of work. Applies them to perform work requiring analytical business skills.

Decision Making: Makes decisions using broad management limits. Applies guidelines and procedures that leave considerable room for discretion and interpretation. Decisions directly influence project, client relationships and or expenditures. Additionally, decisions exert some influence on organization's long-range goals and objectives. Participates in determining objectives of assignments.

Supervision Received: Works independently under general supervision. Work is reviewed for overall adequacy in performing tasks.

Leadership: Provides guidance and training to less experienced staff as needed. Takes a lead role in group, team or project.

Problem Solving /Operations/Direct Work Involvement: Develops solutions to a variety of problems, typically of moderate scope and complexity. Refers to and interprets policies and practices for guidance.

Client Contacts: Manages internal and external relationships. Represents organization as prime contact for projects and other necessary communications. Interaction may include senior internal and external personnel on significant matters often requiring complex coordination between organizations. Communication involves persuasion and negotiation, as applicable. Seeks ways of improving client service.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum of four years property adjusting experience or Associates Degree equivalent plus 2-4 years experience. INS 21, 22, 23 preferred. Must possess appropriate state adjusters license as required by statute. Prior field experience a plus. In addition, knowledge of structural damages, replacement costs, repair assessments and be familiar with fraud and arson investigations.

Ability to use and apply various software products including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and property estimating programs.

Must be able to interact well with others as this position requires frequent in-person contact with insureds, claimants, witnesses, attorneys and the general public. Must possess strong organizational, oral, written and negotiation skills. Must be able to assimilate and apply technical knowledge while making prompt and accurate decisions. Must have demonstrated superior customer service skills, solve problems effectively and be able to adapt to change. Must be familiar with basic mathematics. Strong PC skills required, including the ability to navigate and process data. Insurance course work strongly preferred. The individual must have a thorough understanding of homeowners and commercial property policies. In addition, the individual should have a high level of initiative and self-motivation with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high daily workloads. The individual should possess strong business and other decision-making skills as well as have the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, display strong planning skills and to work independently with minimal supervision.

Working extended hours and weekends are required during severe storm volume situations.
