This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Environmental Chemist working out of our Redmond, WA office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team NW Remediation Practice and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. Your Impact

Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the collection, identification, and compiling of environmental and chemical data from samples of air, soil, water, and other material. Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

This position can also offer an opportunity for the interested candidate with the right skills and drive to develop beyond data validation, contract lab management and data quality management. We can offer the opportunity to become engaged in client support related to emerging contaminants in manufacturing and other environments where we help our industrial and commercial clients manage emerging contaminant risks to both the environment and their business. Chemistry knowledge is often key to successfully delivering these services to our clients.

Your Impact

  • Support project teams as Project or Program Chemist, including providing support in data validation (including performing, coordinating, and/or providing senior/technical review).

  • Interpretation of environmental chemistry data, data quality evaluation (DQE), data forensics, laboratory coordination, development of environmental sampling programs (including the selection of analytical methodology, evaluating laboratory proposals, and establishing QA/QC parameters), database support, and data entry.

  • Work with laboratories to ensure data meets client requirements and project data quality objectives.

  • Under general supervision, collect and compile chemical and environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices for scientific analysis of chemical contamination.

  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.

  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebook.

  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, location data, laboratory documentation, and logbooks.

  • Utilize the latest technologies and techniques in performing studies and analysis of organic and inorganic compounds to determine their composition.

  • Complete training on assigned tasks.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or closely related discipline.

  • 0-1 years of relevant experience.

  • Analytical chemistry skills, especially spectroscopy, chromatography, and spectrophotometer required.

  • Familiarity with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products.

  • Familiarity with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.

  • Knowledge of the principles and standards of scientific study, field investigation, sampling, experimentation, quality assurance of chemical measurements, and documentation.

  • Strong interpersonal and technical writing skills are critical (technical writing course may be required during first year of employment if warranted).

  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Chemistry or closely related discipline.

  • Experience in consulting environments and commercial environmental laboratories.

  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

  • Experience writing analytical SOPs, QAPPs, FSPs and other quality management documents.

  • Basic knowledge of USEPA analytical methods, including experience in operation of laboratory instrumentation and associated data systems desired.

  • Familiarity with the Department of Defense Quality Systems Manual for Environmental Laboratories and experience supporting DoD projects is a plus.

  • Experience assisting project teams to select analytical methodology, evaluate laboratory proposals, establish QA/QC requirements, and working with laboratories to ensure data meets client requirements and project data quality objectives in support of work performed under CERCLA, RCRA, CWA, SDWA and other environmental regulatory programs.

  • Essential professional licensure/certification.

  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.

  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation:

Expected Salary: $49,400 - $74,100

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
