Schenectady City School District Utility Worker in Schenectady, New York
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS : This is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for performing a wide variety of building maintenance and repair tasks. General supervision is received from a Labor Foreman, Head Utility Worker, Head General Mechanic, or a higher level skilled employee. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate cleaning or maintenance workers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES :
Repairs office and/or school furniture;
Repairs plumbing fixtures;
Replaces window glass and cords;
Repairs and installs fences;
Builds forms for concrete work;
Mixes mortar;
Installs playground equipment;
Assists in cleaning and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment;
Cuts and threads pipe;
Sets up scaffolding;
Prepares room set-ups and knock downs according to room schedules;
Washes walls, ceilings, and windows;
Paints walls and ceilings;
Acts as a substitute custodian;
Loads and unloads trucks and occasionally drives motor vehicles;
Mows and rakes lawns and trims shrubs and trees;
Removes snow from sidewalks;
Performs a variety of related work as required;
May prepare and maintain simple records and reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of building maintenance practices; working knowledge of general mechanics, tools and equipment usage, terminology and safety precautions, ability to follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude.
Job Qualifications
(A) One year of experience in building maintenance or trade's work; OR
(B) An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by (A) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a New York State driver's license (Class 5) at time of appointment.
