Skidmore College Senior Data Analyst and BI Developer in Saratoga Springs, New York

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Prospect Development, the Senior Data Analyst and BI Developer plays a crucial role in this relationship management process by providing actionable, value-added intelligence and recommendations regarding Skidmore constituents' wealth, history, and circumstances that would influence engagement and philanthropic capacity and related strategies, or help to advance the College in various ways. The position is responsible for helping leverage data and identifying opportunities for growth, spotting trends, as well as recognize potential issues and offer solutions. Their work involves creating actionable reports, analysis and data visualizations for management and external audiences.

Primary Job Duties:

Prospect Development

  • Establish and complete analytical projects that are designed to identify new prospects, re-evaluate known prospects, and build the pipeline of potential donors, either working independently or in collaboration with teammates. Assign ratings based on detailed wealth analysis.

  • Develop and validate statistical and predictive models for alumni, parents and friends for engagement and giving likelihood. Build relationships across campus to collate and share data, reports and expertise.

  • Implement data mining processes to identify trends and patterns in giving, volunteerism, event participation and provide in-depth data analysis to better understand donor behavior, segmentation strategies and provide recommendations to management staff.

  • Respond to research requests on individuals or groups, tailoring reporting and/or answering specific questions on wealth, affinity and likelihood of giving, to help guide the work of the frontline fundraisers and management.

  • Work collaboratively with gift officers and other staff to ensure strategic use of analytics, analysis and research, i.e. suggest prospects for specific funding opportunities, and/or event invitation lists and other cultivation opportunities.

  • Work as part of the team in maintaining the integrity of the database, including updating records, enhancing data collection and reporting efforts and maintaining data integrity of the prospect management system.

  • Actively manage prospect data and analytical requests to give support to management requirements.

  • Train new and existing research personnel on the database and reporting available to Advancement staff.

Operations:

  • Responsibility to generate summary and specified dashboard reports which represent operational data in brief and intelligible format, suitable for the target audience, which includes executive, leadership department managers and executive board of directors.

  • Carry out quality assessment of data, data reports and the accompanying decisions.

  • Liaise with executive leadership to spearhead the organization in employing data-motivated decision making.

  • Conduct analysis of findings and offer action-driven recommendations and insights to executive leaders and managers on the basis of results.

  • Serve on various working group teams as required or available.

Qualifications and Competencies

Education: Bachelor's degree with 5-7 years of experience in an appropriate area of specialization such as data analytics, statistics, business intelligence - or an acceptable combination of education and experience required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Solid technical skills, including direct experience and proficiency in Excel, PowerBI, and/or Tableau. Experience working with relational databases required.

  • Strong statistical and analytical skills and experience carrying out interpretations by utilizing intricate data sets.

  • Experience in designing and presenting managerial level presentations and reports.

  • Outstanding skills in finding resolution to complicated problems while performing independently in a multifaceted and dynamic environment.

  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and best practices, preferably in higher education or non-profit environment.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, verbally and in writing.

  • Strong interpersonal skills that enable successful relationships with colleagues, both within own team and within the overall department.

  • Effective training skills.

  • Demonstrated research experience using both public and subscription-based tools and databases (including international resources).

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion.

  • Ability to analyze and summarize extensive and diverse facts into useful information.

  • Ability to efficiently organize and prioritize a wide range of assignments and projects while demonstrating keen attention to detail, accountability, and follow through.

  • Willing to experiment with new and different ways to harness tools and resources available to the team. Knowledge of, and experience working with, relational databases, especially in a fundraising context.

Salary range: $60,000 - $73,000
