Skidmore College Assistant Director, Student Outreach in Saratoga Springs, New York

Summary

The Assistant Director for Student Outreach (AD) provides vital leadership to the Skidmore College Opportunity Program (https://www.skidmore.edu/opportunity_program/) (OP), a program designed for economically and academically disadvantaged students and a source of student diversity for the College. The Assistant Director is also responsible for coordinating the admissions component of OP, which includes all outreach and recruitment efforts, supporting students as they submit their applications, reading applications, and collaborating with the Director to make determinations for admission. The Assistant Director coordinates and assesses the Summer Academic Institute (https://www.skidmore.edu/opportunity_program/institute.php) (SAI), a five-week summer bridge program designed to deliver a high-quality pre-college academic experience for students, introduce them to the rigors of the Skidmore curriculum, and facilitate their immersion into the Skidmore and Saratoga Springs communities.

Primary Job Duties

  • Coordinating with the Director of OP to successfully enroll an OP class each year and fulfill the target numbers as defined by OP’s partnership with New York State Education Department and the Kettering Fund in Ohio.

  • Organizing, and directing the Summer Academic Institute (SAI) for approximately 40-incoming first-year OP students. The AD collaborates with rest of the OP staff to develop and offer a coordinated transitional five-week program of instruction, support services, and social engagement activities.

  • Serving as an academic advisor during the Summer Academic Institute and as needed during the academic year.

  • Developing and coordinating psycho-social engagement activities, programs, and workshops designed to help retain students from matriculation to degree completion at Skidmore College.

Education: Master’s degree in a related field is required

Experience: A minimum of five years of professional experience in higher education. Experience with advising undergraduate students from underrepresented populations, familiarity with college access programs, and participation in the college admissions process, including the reading of applications, are highly desirable.

  • Knowledgeable of best practices for ensuring the success and retention of underrepresented students.

  • Have a strong knowledge of educational offerings within New York State public and private schools, knowledge of NYS Regents exams and SATs/ACTs, and an understanding of circumstances contributing to a student being academically and economically disadvantaged.

  • Must have comparative knowledge of high schools and other preparatory programs outside of NYS, in other states and in other countries.

  • have effective project/program coordination techniques.

  • possess exceptional interpersonal, communication, analytical, and customer service skills.

  • collaborative in their development and implementation of projects and programs.

  • willing to travel throughout New York and Ohio and work outside of a normal workweek.

Salary range: $65,000-$75,000
