Sarasota County Government Breeze Transit Maintenance Technician / Mechanic - Starting at $25.54/hr in Sarasota, Florida

Do you have mechanical experience in the automotive or heavy truck industry? Do you have ASE certifications now or have the desire and ability to become ASE certified? Our Breeze Transit department is in need of someone with skilled diagnostic abilities, capable of repair and preventative maintenance on both medium and heavy-duty diesel buses, as well as gas-powered support vehicles. We run a Monday through Friday first-shift schedule for all mechanic positions. Entry-level position starts out paying $23.54/hr (Step 4) + $2.00/hr pay additive, with higher pay (steps) for those with experience. Full benefits begin within 60 days of hire, vacation and holiday time starts to accrue on day one and our ASE program pays .20 per hour per ASE certification with 36 total payable certifications available.

About the Position
In this role, you will…
Diagnose, maintain, overhaul, inspect, and repair fixed route bus systems and components. Examples include, but not are limited to, the following: engines, transmissions, electrical, pneumatic, braking, and hydraulic systems, wheelchair ramps and ADA equipment, fareboxes, and electronic equipment.
Utilize a laptop computer, handheld scanners, computer software, technical manuals, and online media to correctly diagnose and repair vehicle systems and components.
Perform service calls and trade buses out for the operations department as required.
Enter repair information, labor hours, and detailed notes into the maintenance information system.
Update your hours worked into your Workday timecard system daily.
Accurately fill out PMI forms and submit them to your supervisor in a timely manner.
Clean shop, grounds, vehicle wash areas, and vehicles as required by operational needs.
Repair shop equipment, as necessary.
Work Hours:
Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
R otating on-call schedule to cover the weekends, when needed.
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent education.
Two (2) years of experience in the automotive/heavy equipment/transit repair industry.
Valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire.
Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements within six (6) months after the date of hire. ( We're willing to help with this! )
Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) certifications in Transit Brakes (H4) and Steering and Suspension (H5) are not required at the time of hire but must be obtained within twelve (12) months from the date of hire. ( We're willing to help with this, too! )
* Must supply own basic tool set and rolling toolbox upon hire. This position is eligible for a $1,200 annual tool allowance. *
Certifications we're willing to help you obtain: Automotive (A) series, Transit (H) series, Heavy Truck (T) series, and for some of the advanced level certifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- E.P.A. Section 608 & 609 certifications.
Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Individuals must regularly bend, stretch, and use arms, back, and legs to perform job task requirements necessary to accomplish position duties.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five (5) years.
About Everything Else
Starting Pay Rate: $23.54 (Step 4) + $2.00/hr pay additive (bringing your hourly rate to $25.54/hr)
Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience.
For Master status, as well as each A.S.E. Certification obtained, there is an additional $0.20/hr pay additive !
