JOB SUMMARY

Monitors recreational areas and City beaches to provide assistance and protection to participants. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and/or Head Lifeguard. Some positions may be called upon to oversee other lifeguards as the Assistant Head Lifeguard in charge for specific days, and carry out the duties of the Head Lifeguard in his/her absence. Duties are performed in an outdoor environment with moderate exposure to adverse weather conditions, excessive noise, direct and indirect sunlight, open water, or potential personal danger.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a part-time, temporary position with no benefits.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Head Lifeguard position instructs, trains and directs the activities of subordinate, temporary workers; has no authority in disciplinary, hiring or firing decisions; and does not conduct performance evaluations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

This list is ILLUSTRATIVE only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by the incumbent of this class. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Rescue distressed persons, using rescue techniques and equipment.
  • Contact emergency medical personnel in case of serious injury.
  • Examine injured persons and administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using training and medical supplies and equipment.
  • Monitor recreational areas, such as swimming areas, on foot or from towers.
  • Complete and maintain records of weather and beach conditions, emergency medical treatments performed, and other relevant incident information.
  • Warn recreational participants of inclement weather, unsafe areas, or illegal conduct.
  • Observe activities in assigned areas to detect hazards, disturbances or safety infractions.
  • Inventory and maintain all equipment/supplies associated with lifeguard dutiesat City Beach.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Positions assigned to Head and Assistant Head Lifeguard may include the following duties:

  • Assist with recruitment and training of lifeguard staff, including preseason United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) training.
  • Develop weekly/monthly work schedules and maintain daily time reports for lifeguard staff.
  • Organize and plan in-service training twice a week throughout the season.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with City employees and the public.
  • Enforce rules and regulations of safe practices within the recreational areas assigned.
  • Work well under pressure and maintain a calm and professional demeanor under stressful or adversarial conditions.
  • Work independently and make appropriate decisions in the absence of a supervisor.

Physical Demands:

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discer n verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and on a telephone.

Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, scan designated area(s), recognize swimmers in distress, possible hazards, unsafe behaviors, and emergency situations.

Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to grasp, pull, twist, push, and kick.

Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to run, jump, dive, swim, lift, pull, twist, rotate, in and out of the water; sit for up to 40 minutes per rotation.
