General Description

SUNY Niagara is seeking a qualified and experienced Welding Instructor to join our Business & STEM division. The ideal candidate will be responsible for teaching various welding techniques and processes to students, helping them gain the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary for success in the welding industry. This position requires a strong background in welding, a commitment to safety, and the ability to foster a supportive learning environment. This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track position reporting to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The Welding Instructor will be responsible for teaching welding courses to students in a classroom and laboratory setting on SUNY Niagara’s main campus in Sanborn, NY. In addition, the instructor will be responsible for attending regular office hours, meetings on campus, and participating in committees. Teaching assignments may be during day, evening, or weekend hours.

This position requires a combination of instructional expertise and hands-on experience in various welding techniques and safety protocols. The successful candidate will have a passion for teaching and a solid background in welding and the various welding techniques and process i.e. Shielded Metal Arc ( SMAW , Gas Tungsten Arc Welding ( GTAW ), Gas Metal Arc Welding ( GMAW ) and cutting processes.

The Instructor will be responsible for program coordination, student advisement, assessment of learning outcomes, participation in divisional and college activities, and all required duties as outlined in the Faculty Handbook. The typical teaching load is 15 lecture hours or 18 lecture/lab hours per semester.

This position will only be required to work 162 days per academic year (August – May) and will be provided with a winter break from mid-December to early January, and a Spring Break for one week in mid-March.

Typical Work Activities

Instruction

  • Provide instruction with the focus on teaching and learning to help ensure students in each class successfully meet all course outcomes and classroom objectives

  • Ensure appropriate course-level rigor in class instruction and assessment methodologies.

  • Development, integration, and delivery of course content planning documents including, but not limited to, course syllabi and assessments.

  • Establish and maintain a classroom climate consistent with the NCCC mission and vision.

  • Provide at least 5 office hours per week.

Professional Development

  • Participate in professional development activities.

  • Maintain a current knowledge of discipline/field of study as evidenced by active participation in professional organizations, maintenance of current scholarly collection of resources, and engagement in active, on-going dialogue with peer faculty and industry experts.

  • Participate in faculty development opportunities, including program-specific and campus-wide faculty meetings.

Administrative Duties

  • Meet requirements for creation, distribution, retention and/or submission of paperwork.

  • Participate in curriculum monitoring and development process by providing feedback to Program Coordinator and/or the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.

  • Complete required reporting such as student attendance, census, student learning outcome progress (course level), and final grade calculation and entry.

  • Attend required College functions/events.

  • Participate in faculty senate and divisional committees

  • Advise students for classes and career options.

  • If applicable, as program coordinator:

  • Recordkeeping, budgeting, scheduling

  • Program updates (syllabi, degree requirements)

  • New course and program development

  • Represent the program at open houses

  • Program evaluation ( PEER ) and Advisory Board

  • Hiring, training, and evaluation of adjunct faculty and part-time technical assistants

  • Supervision of College Accelerated Program ( CAP ) courses at local high schools

    Essential Functions

Must be able to operate laboratory equipment; must be able to navigate relationships with a diverse population; must be able to operate computers; must be able to speak to groups; must be able to prepare reports and documentation required in performance of duties; must be able to physically perform the duties of the position; must be able to relate to senior members of the department and administration.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Welding Technology or related field or completion of Welding Certificate program(s)

  • 5 years of professional welding experience

    Desirable Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Technology or a related field

  • Prior teaching or training experience in welding

  • Certified Welding Inspector CWI certification via the American Welding Society.

  • Proficiency in various welding techniques
