Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.

  • Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical psychology from an APA accredited program

  • Completion of an APA accredited internship;

  • Experience in providing crisis intervention services;

  • Experience providing consultation services;

  • Experience developing and providing prevention related programming;

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Candidate must be eligible for (or currently possess) licensure as a psychologist in the State of Texas. License must be obtained within 24 months of start date and must be maintained to remain eligible for employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum one year of clinical experience in a higher education counseling setting or with a similar adult population, may include pre-doctoral internship or postdoctoral residency

  • Experience working with the specific needs of student athletes

  • Experience consulting with sports medicine professionals, coaches, and other athletics staff;

  • Interest/experience providing services to populations working in high-performance programs/professions;

  • Experience with athletics performance-based interventions and measurement processes/techniques

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, campus departments, and student groups;

  • Experience providing services to First Gen student populations;

  • Ability/experience providing services within a high demand/fast paced setting;

  • Possess interpersonal flexibility with a sense of humor;

  • An awareness of the importance of life balance;

  • Commitment to the developmental approach to student services.

Job Duties

The Texas StateUniversity Counseling Center (https://www.counseling.txst.edu/) works with a student community from a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences. To that end staff strives to provide services and programs within a framework responsive to and affirming of students and seeks professional colleagues interested in joining a team committed to enhancing campus services to better support all students.. Accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services ( IACS ), the Counseling Center is also proud to host a well-respected APA -accredited doctoral internship program as well as practicum training and a post-doctoral residency

This full time 12 month position is shared with and fully embedded within the Department of Athletics in partnership with the Counseling Center. Texas State University is a member of the Sunbelt Conference and is a member of the NCAA Division 1. In the mission statement, the Department of Athletics shares their philosophy:

The successful candidate will have a generalist orientation and evidence knowledge and experiences responsive to the variety of presentations and backgrounds of student athletes. Also, the successful candidate will provide services and programs in support of the emotional/psychological and personal well-being of intercollegiate athletes as well as provide consultative services to the staff of the Department of Athletics. In addition, they will possess specific interests in providing services which support the mission of an engaged university counseling program located within a Division of Student Success, the Department of Athletics, and a Hispanic Serving Institution ( HSI ).

This position is housed in a location convenient to student athletes. The position will report to the Senior Associate Athletics Director and the Counseling Center Director (or their designees), operate within the processes/guidelines of the Department of Athletics and the NCAA , and will abide by Counseling Center policies and procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Time-effective personal counseling (individual and group)

  • Initial clinical assessment & triage

  • Crisis intervention

  • Outreach programming

  • Consultation services and training with coaches, medical staff, and athletic administration

  • Maintaining an awareness of and ability to work within NCAA policies

  • Exhibit an ability to navigate complex professional and administrative roles while maintaining strong professional relationships and appropriate boundaries

  • Clinical assessment

  • Clinical training & supervision, as available

  • Administrative duties (including staff and committee meetings)

  • Professional development/continuing professional education

  • Adherence to ethical codes of conduct and services

  • Providing services within a high demand/fast paced setting

  • Conduct services in-person or via a secure virtual platform.

  • Other duties as assigned.
