Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with 6+ years of full-time student conduct and community standards related administrative experience.

  • Experience supervising full-time student conduct hearing officers and investigators.

  • Experience overseeing the day-to-day operations and management of a Student Conduct Office.

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of student conduct and conflict resolution theory.

  • Experience with student conduct report administration and using data analytics to guide decisions related to the student behavior.

  • Proficiency in interpreting case law, legal documents, and policies related to higher education, student conduct, and federal, state, and local laws.

  • Demonstrated experience leading training programs, workshops, and presentations for diverse audiences such as faculty, deans, and staff.

  • Demonstrated experience of working independently on sensitive and confidential issues with discretion, tact, and political sensitivity, while resolving complex and often volatile situations.

Job Description

The Assistant Dean of Students for Student Conduct and Community Standards serves as a key member of the Division of Student Success at Texas State University. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Success and Dean of Students, this individual is responsible for overseeing a campus-wide, equity-centered, non-academic conduct and community standards process. This role involves managing a comprehensive educational and administrative system that addresses student and student organization conduct across various categories, including Clery, Hazing, Title IX, Alcohol, and Other Drugs. The Assistant Dean of Students will serve as the “responsible official” for the initial resolution, case management, compliance, and monitoring of sanctions related to student code of conduct violations. This position collaborates closely with campus leaders to ensure a fair, equitable, and effective approach to student conduct and community standards.

Job Duties

  • Day-to-Day Operations and Student Conduct Management: Oversee the daily operations of the Student Conduct & Community Standards Office, including reviewing and processing student conduct cases, student organization conduct, and referrals to other university departments. Take primary responsibility for managing and resolving all student conduct cases related to non-academic violations, ensuring the consistent, fair, and timely application of the student code of conduct. This includes investigating, documenting, and implementing sanctions, while ensuring compliance with relevant university policies and legal requirements, including Clery, Hazing, Title IX, Alcohol, and Other Drugs policies. Ensure the efficient, equitable handling of cases in alignment with university policies and procedures.

  • Staff Supervision and Management: Recruit, hire, and provide leadership to the Student Conduct & Community Standards team. Directly supervise staff in accordance with university policies and performance management protocols. Foster a collaborative, supportive, and high-performing work environment, encouraging professional development and team cohesion.

  • Onboarding and Training: Develop and implement comprehensive onboarding programs for new staff and ongoing training initiatives to enhance staff competency in managing student conduct cases. Ensure staff are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to uphold conduct standards and deliver high-quality services to the campus community.Develop and deliver training sessions, workshops, and presentations on student conduct-related topics for faculty, staff, administrators, and student leaders. Topics may include prevention strategies, conduct policy updates, and conflict resolution techniques.

  • Student Conduct Report Administration: Manage the administration of all student conduct reports, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with university procedures. Respond to requests for disciplinary clearances, subpoenas, and other related inquiries, maintaining confidentiality and the integrity of sensitive information.

  • Collaboration and Support: Collaborate with key university departments and campus bodies involved in addressing student conduct violations, including Housing and Residential Life, Hearing Boards, and the Honor Code Council. Provide support, guidance, and training to promote consistency and fairness in conduct procedures across campus.Serve as the primary liaison between Texas State University and the local community on student conduct matters. Provide consultation and support to faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders on alleged conduct violations and resolution processes, ensuring clear communication and resolution.

  • Student Handbook Stewardship: Serve as the primary steward for the Student Handbook, leading the biennial review and revision process in compliance with university policies. Oversee the publication and distribution of the updated handbook and ensure its accessibility to students, faculty, and staff. Interpret and communicate the policies and procedures within the Student Handbook to the campus community.

  • Program Evaluation and Improvement: Oversee systems to evaluate the effectiveness of Student Conduct & Community Standards programs on an ongoing basis. Utilize assessment data to continuously improve program quality, manage risk, and ensure that conduct programs contribute to a healthy and safe campus environment.

  • Policy and Procedure Development and Review: Lead the ongoing development and review of student conduct policies and procedures, making recommendations for updates to align with evolving legal, regulatory, and institutional needs.

  • Database Administration: Oversee and manage the student conduct database system, ensuring it operates securely and efficiently. Serve as the primary contact for the database vendor and maintain Maxient Access Level 5, ensuring accurate records are kept for all conduct cases.

  • Compliance Oversight: Ensure strict adherence to federal and state regulations, including Clery, Title IX, FERPA , subpoenas, and expunction orders. Support the Dean of Students and other university departments in maintaining compliance across the Student Conduct & Community Standards office. Ensure that student conduct cases are compliant with applicable legal and institutional requirements. Maintain accurate case records and monitor the effectiveness of sanctions, providing ongoing support to students involved in the process. Manage the provision of alcohol & drug, anger management, and community service compliance services for students to fulfill sanctions mandated by Student Conduct and Community Standards or municipal courts.

  • Legal Representation and Consultation: Represent the university in student conduct matters with local, state, and federal agencies, including the District Attorney’s Office, local law enforcement, and private attorneys. Serve as the primary point of contact for external legal entities regarding student conduct issues. Ensure consistent handling of student conduct cases in compliance with legal requirements and consult with University Counsel as necessary or mandated by university policy to manage legal risks associated with student conduct.

  • Risk Assessment and Decision Making: Conduct risk assessments for student conduct cases, evaluating potential impacts and recommending appropriate interventions. Analyze trends in student behavior and develop strategies to mitigate risks to campus safety and well-being.

  • Student Advocacy and Support: Ensure a fair and supportive process for students throughout the conduct system, advocating for their rights and providing guidance on sanctions, appeals, and other conduct-related matters. Strive to ensure that student development is an integral part of the conduct process.

  • Provide Non-Clinical Case Management: Offer non-clinical case management services as necessary.

  • Other Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Student Success and Dean of Students to support the broader goals of the Division of Student Success and contribute to the continued success of the university.
