Job Description Summary

The Cal Poly Leadership and Service area consists of the Center for Leadership, the Center for Service in Action, Clubs and Organizations, and Fraternity and Sorority Life, which supports the development of student leadership and service on campus and in the surrounding community. Their events and services encourage leadership skill development and competency, assumption of leadership and service roles, community building and collaboration, and the continuation of service to ones community after graduation. We are committed to supporting the academic success of students by fostering the development of integrity and problem-solving skills, teaching self-advocacy and personal responsibility, and providing students with opportunities to learn and practice the fundamental principles of good citizenship, responsible leadership, and the importance of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in a global society. Clubs and Organizations provides an opportunity for students to participate in registered student organizations with a specific interest and focus relevant to the participants academic or personal interest, to participate in club sports as student-athletes, and acquire leadership, event planning, and team skills.

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Program Coordinator assumes responsibility for the daily operations of the AmeriCorps College Corps programs. The Program Coordinator recommends and executes policies related to the delivery of programs and services to students, faculty, and staff at Cal Poly and service sites/host agencies. The program coordinator suggests program priorities, assists in moving toward achieving program goals, and conducts assessment to evaluate program effectiveness. This position will assist the Lead Program Coordinator and Manager with maintaining positive and productive relationships with Corps members, host agencies, staff, and faculty stakeholders. The program coordinator will oversee College Corps members in one of the three focus areas: Climate Action, Food Insecurity and K-12 Education. In addition, the position contributes to the ongoing compliance with reporting and other requirements for the grants that support these programs, and their potential ongoing renewal. All staff of the AmeriCorps program team should be committed to the ongoing personal and professional development of students, assessing risk for member activities and working conditions of members, establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with constituents on- and off-campus, and performing effectively under the pressure of deadlines and other administrative demands.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A masters degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to work in multicultural environment, advise students and student groups from under-represented backgrounds and identity groups, and recognize multicultural value systems and work accordingly.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and pro ram management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, organize, and meet constant timelines.
  • Ability to use office equipment including copier, fax, and telephone system.
  • Ability to successfully work independently, organizing own work and coordinating work activities of others.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interface with all levels of staff including students, faculty and staff, and the public.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • A background check is required for all regular benefited positions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms such as Instagram, Discord, etc.
