Summary

Grifols Diagnostic Solutions is seeking a Mechanic II to support our Calibration and Maintenance team in San Diego, CA. As the Mechanic II, you will be responsible for the completion of maintenance and general support of on-site equipment and systems. Conducts repetitive, predictive, condition based, reactive maintenance and troubleshooting of cGMP production equipment, QC equipment, and R&D equipment. The position works closely with equipment owners, external vendors, and other departments to ensure instrumentation is maintained per defined procedures, schedules, and in compliance with regulatory standards.

Successful candidates must have a High School diploma with 1 to 2 years of Maintenance experience in biotech/pharmaceutical regulatory facility. Experience with computerized maintenance management system is highly preferred. Experience with filling machines, water systems, lab equipment, freezers, and other onsite equipment/systems highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts general preventive maintenance according to SOPs/work instructions and performs planned and unplanned repairs as necessary.

  • Responds within given timeframe to service requests from equipment owners, communicates status updates, and documents in work order summary.

  • Utilizes SAP and Maximo Computerized Maintenance Management System to track and document all maintenance activities.

  • Works in partnership with Maintenance, Calibration and Engineering team members, Manufacturing, and other internal/external customers to ensure equipment is maintained per defined procedures and schedule.

  • Reviews Safety Job Hazard Analysis and follows all safety protocols when executing maintenance activities including Lockout Tagout.

  • Follows established safety and environmental guidelines and procedures for all work performed. Immediately reports safety and environmental incidents including injuries, illnesses, near misses, and safety suggestions.

  • Cleaning and organization of designated work areas in manufacturing and maintenance shop.

  • Responsible for executing maintenance activities across multiple buildings and processes.

  • Performs medium complexity repairs and preventive maintenance independently. More complex repair and/or adjustments to manufacturing equipment with supervision.

  • Collaborates with department teams to complete specialized maintenance and equipment projects including equipment improvements and upgrades.

  • Assists in coordination and scheduling of maintenance activities with equipment owners and external calibration vendors.

  • Identifies process improvement opportunities from day to day work to reduce non-value added paperwork and activities.

  • Successfully completes training and passes qualifications and demonstrates an ability to independently perform equipment monitoring and operational checks on manufacturing equipment.

  • Recommends solutions to reoccurring issues, identifies process improvement opportunities, and partners with Engineering to implement solutions.

  • Interfaces with external vendors for troubleshooting, pick-up/drop-off of equipment for repair.

  • Learns and completes GMP and other controlled documentation.

  • Supports maintenance repair spare parts inventory management including adding new spare parts and performing inventory cycle counts.

  • Assists with training of entry level maintenance mechanics on the team.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Good communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Prompt, consistent, and orderly work habits.

  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID drawings and electrical schematics.

  • Overall knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, refrigeration, steam, electrical systems, controls, and maintenance methods. Specializing in at least one.

  • Ability to learn good manufacturing practices and follow established procedures and regulations.

  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned activities on time per the production schedule.

  • Troubleshooting skills on various mechanical/electrical equipment and systems.

  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills.

  • Ability to use Microsoft based platforms and/or company Intranet and e-mail.

  • Ability to use Building Management System (BMS) and Manufacturing Control System (MCS) including Siemens, Allen Bradley systems.

  • Ability to use SAP, Maximo or similar ERP platforms to track all plant maintenance and calibration activities.

  • Available to work overtime when necessary and work varying shifts, including an On-Call program.

  • General knowledge of shop tool operation and safety.

  • Ability to interact well with others in a team environment. Strong organizational skills and time management skills.

Education

High School degree

Experience

  • 1-2 years general maintenance experience.

  • Experience in biotech/pharmaceutical regulated facility.

  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems highly preferred.

  • Experience with Filling Machines, Water systems, Laboratory equipment, Freezers, and other on-site equipment/systems highly preferred.’

Equivalency

Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements. Example: If a job level requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience, an equivalency could include 8 years of experience, an Associate’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience.

Occupational Demands

  • Schedule includes Monday-Friday 8 hour shifts with potential to work overtime and possibly weekends

  • Must be available for On-Call support

  • Expected to be on feet for 8 hours a day.

  • Climb heights up to 5-15 feet by ladder.

  • Lift up to 40lbs may be required.

  • Environment requires that gowning in the form of hospital scrubs, bunny suits, gloves and steel toe boots be worn. Also, no make-up or jewelry can be worn when working in the clean room environment.

  • Work in clean room environment with large mechanical equipment, piping, and pumps connecting to tanks serviced by high-pressure steam, water and air together this creates a loud environment.

  • Work with electrical systems 480VAC and below

  • Work with hazardous materials and chemicals.

  • Work on automated fill machines

  • Work on reverse osmosis systems

  • Work on refrigeration systems

  • Wear air purifying respirator and wear necessary hearing protection.

  • Crawl, kneel and stoop and work in small work spaces

  • Must be able to work in cold environments inside cold rooms and freezers for extended periods

Pay Scale

The estimated pay scale for this Mechanic II role based in San Diego, CA, is $26.68 to 33.35 per hour. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in up to 5% of the company bonus pool.
