Job Title: Wahweap Hatchery Manager (Wildlife Biologist III) Job Description How would you like to work 15 minutes from breathtaking Lake Powell?  As an employee of the Wahweap State Fish Hatchery, you can do just that!  You will have an interesting opportunity to cultivate some of Utah's native and sportfish. You will raise bonytail, catfish, virgin river chub, boreal toad, and hybrid striped bass in 35 ponds. Principal Duties As the Hatchery Manager, you will:

  • Plans, directs and supervises all aspects of a safe, efficient, and successful hatchery operation in coordination with the overall mission of UDWR.
  • Monitors and evaluates operations, programs, processes, and/or practices for quality and effectiveness; makes recommendations for improvement; facility and equipment maintenance. 
  • Supervises all hatchery personnel, assigns/directs work, conducts employee evaluations, staff training and development, takes appropriate disciplinary/corrective actions, makes hiring/termination recommendations, etc. 
  • Coordinates and works with local City, County, State, and Federal Government agencies, and delivers presentations at meetings, conferences, and symposiums.
  • Develops, administers, and monitors the hatchery's annual budget including revenues, expenditures, and budget projection.
  • Administers the propagation of fish species that are healthy and of optimum quality. 
  • Writes and drafts technical reports, articles, or related material based on research, investigation, or analysis.
  • Supervises and follows strict guidelines for importing and exporting eggs/fish from the hatchery to stocking locations throughout the state. 
  • Plans, schedules & meets stocking requirements for production, research & endangered fish species provided by program leaders.
  • Conducts hatchery tours and training pertaining to hatchery operations.
  • Presents lectures and information for community education at schools, city functions, or other public relations gatherings.
  • Answers phone inquiries.

The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for this position has:

  • A bachelor's degree, or higher, in Aquaculture/Fisheries or a directly related field of study, or a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field plus 5 years of directly related experience. or 6 years of directly related experience.
  • knowledge and experience with hatchery management including both warm and cold-water fish culture practices (e.g. management, propagation, distribution, fish health, animal nutrition, water chemistry, etc.)
  • knowledge of general management practices and procedures, including personnel management, organizational methodology, planning, and management strategies.
  • ability to understand and manage annual budgets and expenditures.
  • willingness and ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, city entities, the media, employees, and the public.
  • ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing, read and understand information presented in writing.
  • ability to think clearly and make quick decisions during an emergency event, make decisions, or solve a problem by using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions.
  • knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
  • knowledge of the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, and fede ral and state wildlife laws.
  • knowledge of management, protection, propagation, and conservation of fish and wildlife.
  • the ability and desire to learn and implement new technologies and techniques.
  • knowledge of fish transport equipment, gages, and pumps, compressed and liquid oxygen equipment, and safety requirements.
  • skills in maintenance projects nd procedures, plumbing, construction, welding, small engine repairs, electrical work, and heavy equipment, ability to diagnose and repair problems in a variety of areas relating to maintenance.

Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor s degree in a natural resources field. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in a wildlife-related natural resources field or other applicable field that is beneficial for the position. Preference for years of demonstrated directly related work experience may be substituted for a degree. *   *Why You Should Join Our Team Wahweap State Fish Hatchery provides a variety of new opportunities for employees to learn, and advance within the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems before 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.

``` - Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to   10% of your salary between both plans ( pension and 401(k)) - Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.

Paid Time Off:

  • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
  • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
