Job Summary

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute ( CTSI ) supports many faculty researchers, data scientists, clinical coordinators and informaticists. This position will provide support for systems and application infrastructure and software build deployment requiring a broad range of solutions. Projects range from automated testing, container management and deployment, application integration, and service deployment automation. You’ll be part of a small team of engineers and will need to think through and solve complex problems and effectively implement solutions. We’re looking for a flexible person willing to learn new technologies and excited to work on a variety of projects. Your contributions and ownership of our group will be an integral component of maintaining our infrastructure, applications, and infrastructure to provide cutting-edge health research to the University of Utah.

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute ( CTSI ) serves as an academic home for clinical and translational research, developing innovative health services and training a new generation of investigators. Four foundations of discovery compose the institute: Cores and Services, Education and Training, Clinical Research Support Office, and Administration, and these foundations provide support for T1 to T4 research.

This position is hybrid, requiring the selected candidate to either reside in or be willing to move to the Salt Lake City area. This position may require working off hours.

Utah CTSI has produced leading investigators with several NIH grants awarded for their various “bench-to-bedside” areas of research and partners with other flagship institutions to contribute published works and clinical success.

Responsibilities

  • Working with software developers and software engineers to ensure that development follows established processes and works as intended.

  • Participate in technology selection and make recommendations based on customer business requirements and established constraints.

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and improve software and architecture.

  • Embody a culture of collaboration, transparency, and candor.

  • Deploy updates and fixes, and provide advanced technical support for application deployment environments.

  • Build tools to reduce the occurrence of errors and improve customer experience

  • Develop software to integrate with internal back-end systems.

  • Perform root cause analysis of production errors and resolve technical issues.

  • Architect and build automation tools to increase reliability and speed.

  • Develop scripts to automate monitoring and alerting.

  • Design procedures for system troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Learn new tools and techniques to increase scalability and performance.

  • Manage and implement deployment and automation platforms, either using existing frameworks or standing up new ones.

  • Collaborate with the other engineering staff to build out applications and infrastructure for researchers.

  • Support implementation, integration and management of core CTSI informatics systems: REDCap, OpenSpecimen, and custom solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in area of specialty, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); and 4-6 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferences

  • Advanced Linux experience, including system installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with maintaining databases: Oracle, MSSQL , MySQL, MariaDB

  • Minimum 5 years of software development and/or systems administration experience heterogeneous environment of systems.

  • Experience with one or more: Ansible, Puppet and Chef, Splunk, Playwright

  • Knowledge of containerization and deployment techniques using Docker or Apptainer, Podman, Nomad, or Kubernetes

  • Some experience with application integration using middleware tiers and REST API integration

  • Some Microsoft Windows Server experience, including configuration, administration, and troubleshooting.

  • Up-to-date on the latest industry trends; able to articulate trends and potential clearly and confidently

  • Good interpersonal skills and communication with all levels of management

  • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently.

  • Previous experience with software development, infrastructure development, or development and operations

  • Ability to document and design various processes; update existing processes.

  • Experience with one or more general-purpose languages and technologies .e.g. Go, Python, Typescript
