Job Description:

Under direction of the Sustainability Food System Resilience Program Manager and Deputy Director, this position supports outreach, communications, and research tasks for SLCgreen’s local food programs and assists in facilitating and promoting city-wide sustainability initiatives. This is a community-facing role focused on connecting and engaging with residents and community groups. Strong spoken and written communication skills are needed to be successful. Ideal candidates are passionate and knowledgeable about sustainability, eager to learn about food systems work, and driven to help SLCgreen promote sustainability programs and engagement with Salt Lake City residents, community groups, and employees.

This position is part-time (up to 30 hours a week, not to exceed 129 hours per month) with flexible scheduling opportunities.

Position Hourly Range:

$27.00/hr

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Food System Resilience Program Manager with program planning, research, implementation, and administration.

  • Tracks and attends current food system-related issues, events, and activities in the community.

  • Researches best management practices related to municipal food policy and programing, including food system planning, food access, urban agriculture, food waste, and other topics as needed.

  • Assists in the development of a Salt Lake City food environment mapping project, climate plan, urban agriculture program, or other local food projects as relevant.

  • Represents the City at community events through tabling.

  • Assists in maintaining sustainability information and events on the SLCgreen website. Assists with SLCgeen’s social media accounts.

  • Assists with the administration of weekly sustainability email digest.

  • Researches and writes articles for the SLCgreen blog covering a wide range of sustainability and environmental topics with a focus on food systems.

  • Developing creative outreach material to promote sustainability initiatives with different audiences in Salt Lake City (based on neighborhood, language, age, and sector).

  • Responds to resident and business inquiries to sustainability programs.

  • Coordinates public outreach at community engagement events and activities related to SLCgreen's programs, particularly the local food programs.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, public administration, political science, communications or related field. Education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with work experience.

  • Ideal candidates are passionate and knowledgeable about sustainability and driven to help SLCgreen promote sustainability programs and behaviors to Salt Lake City residents and employees.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varied backgrounds in person, over the phone, and via email. Ability to write persuasively and succinctly and to summarize assigned research. Ability to organize work and gain support of employees, external customers and other stakeholders.

  • Must be proficient using computers, Microsoft Office products and social media platforms. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.

  • Position will be expected to represent Salt Lake City at a variety of community events, including those that take place in the evenings and/or on weekends.

  • Ability to move supplies weighing up to 40 pounds and set up a tent.

  • Ability to travel to various locations throughout the City and move supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in a language or languages other than English.

  • Experience or interest in writing and creating marketing material for SLCgreen.

  • Experience or interest in digital marketing, graphic design, or journalism.

  • Experience or interest in event planning and community engagement.

    Working Conditions:

  • Light physical effort for in-office work. Entails remaining frequently in a stationary position working at a computer with intermittent moving. Comfortable working conditions.

  • Tabling events require moderate physical activity, including setting up a tent, transporting supplies, and working outside in various weather conditions.

  • Frequent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

  • May work evenings and weekends attending community events and meetings to present information on the city’s sustainability initiatives.
