Job Summary

The Surgical Services Manager oversees and ensures high-quality patient care, faculty and provider support, and exceptional team member experience to the School of Dentistry’s ( SOD ) high acuity specialty dentistry teams. This newly created position will work with the Director of Clinical Operations, the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, and SOD faculty leadership to build process and programs to support quickly growing oral and maxillofacial surgery, maxillofacial prosthodontics, and general practice residency surgical operations. Candidates are expected to focus on oversight of clinical business operations, quality assurance, system improvement, and clinic staff support and leadership.

Essential Functions

  1. Tasked with creating, building, and implementing a best practice model to support surgical operations within the School of Dentistry. To include scheduling process development in conjunction with U of U Hospital surgical teams, assessing team structure, evaluating resource needs, and proper process and program management.

  2. Responsible for the supervision of daily operations of operating room activities across various hospitals including University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Primary Children’s Hospital.

  3. Ensures competency of clinic support staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through on going staff performance evaluations. Oversees recruitment, training, orientation, and professional development of staff in support of accomplishing clinical goals and mission.

  4. Monitors patient quality assurance metrics and operational improvement plans and implements changes as indicated.

  5. Manages provider schedules and OR block times to efficiently run daily operations.

  6. Leads budget planning efforts for operating room services and monitors clinical productivity and budget adherence.

  7. Collaborates with clinical and financial leadership on clinical performance analysis, data management and goal setting.

  8. Collaborates with leadership on best practices and policies.

  9. Analyzes and advises on new strategic initiatives and business opportunities.

  10. Participates in University-wide committees to establish customer service standards and administrative plans and policies.

  11. Monitors the appropriateness and effectiveness of patient care within the department in order to deliver outstanding service to both internal and external customers.

  12. Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through.

  13. Responsible for collaborating with various hospitals on supply and equipment procurement and monitoring equipment performance.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
