Overview

The Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. CIT helps connect staff to systems while enabling a broader research computing ecosystem to improve productivity and provide a sense of community.

Driving innovation at the intersection of research and operations, the Innovation and Operations team within Research Computing at PNNL accelerates the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies across the laboratory. The team leads the charge in delivering rapid prototypes, leveraging breakthrough advancements in generative AI, autonomous science, remote lab operations, and automation to transform scientific discovery and operational efficiency. With a dynamic team of engineers, developers, UX/UI designers, and project managers, we focus on pushing the boundaries of technology to solve complex challenges and demonstrate the art of the possible. Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing computational tools to PNNL’s scientists and engineers to accelerate their research outcomes. We provide services, expertise and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g. Computing Infrastructure, Systems Design, Operations and Cloud Deployment Support, High Performance Computing (HPC) Consulting, etc.). We support computationally enabled science by providing researchers access to computational building blocks (e.g., High Performance Computing, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). all while fostering a culture of computing through interdisciplinary collaboration and access to computational resources.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control, and completion of specific projects ensuring consistency with organizational strategy, commitments, and goals. This includes acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party resources in order to deliver projects according to plan. Also responsible to define the projects objectives and oversee quality control throughout its life cycle. Key attributes leading to the determination of upward progression in this career family include: project complexity, risk, team size, business volume, contract type, and political/client/business sensitivities.

This position will include roles within the Innovation and Operations Team supporting fast paced initiatives across multiple stakeholders. This team executes projects utilizing emerging technologies, serving as an innovation engine to move the organization forward. This role will involve close collaboration with a broad set of internal stakeholders and partners to plan and execute complex tasks, while overseeing individual and team performance.

This Project Manager position is initially responsible for the management of tasks within the project lifecycle under the direction or as deputy for Senior Project Managers in the Computing and Information Technology.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant project management experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 3+ years of relevant project management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability for writing in a clear and understandable manner.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite; specifically, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

  • Experience supporting or executing hybrid (virtual and in person) events, including proficiency with hybrid communications technologies (i.e., Microsoft Teams and Zoom).

  • Demonstrated organizational skills with ability to prioritize work assignments and budgets and adjust schedules based on changing requirements.

  • Prior experience supporting DOE National Laboratory with data processing and visualization.

  • Experience contributing to a project with a major or minor artificial intelligence component.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
