University of Utah Post Doc Res Assoc w/Ret in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The laboratory of Professor Gabor Marth (http://marthlab.org) at the University of Utah Department of Human Genetics and Utah Center for Genetic Discovery (UCGD, http://ucgd.genetics.utah.edu) is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to lead the development and application of computational algorithms for the detection of somatic mutations leading to somatic mosaicism. The successful candidate will develop, implement, apply, and benchmark a reference-free computational algorithm for detecting somatic mutations across all mutation types, length, and allele frequencies. This work is supported by a grant award in Dr. Marths laboratory to participate in the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues Network, a new NIH initiative to transform our understanding of how somatic mosaicism in human cells influences biology and disease (https://commonfund.nih.gov/smaht). The ideal candidate will have obtained a doctoral degree in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, or genetics; have proficiency with computer programming (C++, Python); experience with algorithm development; and familiarity with the UNIX operating system. Background in genetics and experience working with modern DNA sequencing datasets is a big plus. Applicants should have a passion for solving complex problems and value collaboration and teamwork while also being able to work individually. The candidate will be expected to take a leadership role in collaborations with other groups at the University of Utah, as well as the other funded institutions within the SMaHT Network (https://commonfund.nih.gov/smaht/fundedresearch); publish their work in peer-reviewed journals; and present their work in national and international meetings. A high degree of organization and professionalism is required. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package (including a generous retirement contribution) for highly qualified candidates. This position is available immediately. The successful candidate will join a vibrant and collaborative community of computational, experimental, and clinical scientists. The Marth Laboratory has long been on the vanguard of building computational tools for to accelerate genomic science across a wide spectrum of basic, translational, and clinical research areas. Within the SMaHT Consortium, we are expanding our computational algorithms for discovering, cataloguing, and interpreting somatic mosaicism, with the ultimate goal to build a Human Somatic Mosaicism Atlas. We are also part of the Data Management Coordinating Center for NIHs Undiagnosed Diseases Network where we are building a comprehensive system for longitudinal genome diagnostics. Within NIHs Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program, we are developing and deploying a genomic data management and analysis platform. We are currently poised to join NCIs PDXNet Consortium, where we will be developing machine learning approaches for predicting response for single-agent and combination cancer therapies, to facilitate individualized cancer treatment selection. The Marth Laboratory and the UCGD, located in the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics on the University of Utah Medical School campus in Salt Lake City, operates at the interface between basic and clinical sciences, creating ample opportunities for collaborations with clinical researchers and easy access to high-valued clinical datasets. The proximity to the Wasatch Mountains and the Southern Utah desert provide a unique recreational and geographical landscape that attracts a very diverse and productive scientific community. We are committed to building and fostering a highly diverse scientific community. Please contact Dr. Gabor Marth at gmarth@genetics.utah.edu for any additional information.
