The Road Home Housing Advocate Team Lead - Day Shift in Salt Lake City, Utah

The Road Home was founded in 1923 and has been a leader in the endeavor to end homelessness for over 100 years. We provide low-barrier emergency shelters, supportive services, and housing-first-minded rental assistance that helps individuals and families step out of homelessness and back into the community. We are seeking compassionate and empathetic individuals who are interested in making a difference in the lives of others and their community.

JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Housing Advocate will perform a wide variety of duties relating to working with poverty and vulnerable populations. This team member will work in a homeless resource system that provides emergency shelter and resources to over 200 individuals nightly. JOB DUTIESYou Will:

  • Provide quality customer service to our guests, who may be in need of resources in addition to a warm bed for the night.

  • Monitor and help regulate activities at the Resource Center, ensuring rules and procedures are followed by both staff and guests.

  • Provide clear and specific information and instruct guests of Resource Center rules/procedures in a kind, compassionate, and trauma-informed way.

  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe facility, identifying special needs and referring needs to supervisor.

  • Assist in resolving conflicts that may arise among guests.

  • Write incident reports where appropriate, maintain records of guest stays, and maintain accurate shelter documentation.

  • Answer phones, take messages and respond to the public.

  • Provide occasional crisis intervention and emergency interface with community resources such as EMS and law enforcement.

  • Provide assistance and support to the Shift Supervisor and act as lead staff in the absence of the Supervisor.

  • Operate as part of a team that strives to serve the homeless in our community.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate awareness of, and sensitivity to, diverse populations. Ability to contribute to the Agency’s commitment to enhancing awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnic and culture heritages are particularly valued.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Able to communicate effectively and handle difficult situations with professionalism, compassion and from a Trauma-Informed Care perspective.

  • Ability to exercise proper discretion and independent judgment to make quick decisions, occasionally without immediate direction or supervision.

  • Knowledge of internal and community resources.

  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and a commitment to make a difference.

  • Ability to actively listen, empathize, and offer support to guests.

  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgment within the Trauma-Informed framework to make decisions.

  • Desire to inspire, motivate and support staff and guests.

  • Understanding of the Housing First philosophy. Willingness to have conversations with guests about housing.

  • Good computer skills.

  • Willingness to accept supervision, direction, and constructive feedback.

  • Creativeness in problem-solving.

  • Reliability and dependability.

  • Attends work on a regular and predictable basis.

  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

Physical and Equipment Requirements

  • Must be able to stand, sit and walk for at least an hour at a time.

  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
