Job Description:

We are looking for an Hourly Intern to join our Transportation Division team.

About the Position:

This position is temporary and is anticipated to end in June 2025.

Under the direction of the transportation planning manager, the intern will work alongside the Transportation Division’s transportation planners and civic engagement specialists and provide communications-related support as required.

Tasks may include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Efficient and strategic preparation and management of in-person events and canvassing of neighborhoods;

  • Creation of cohesive engagement reports; informative public outreach materials, email campaigns, and social media posts; superior graphics, infographics, and maps; online interactive tools; and easily navigable website pages to reflect Salt Lake City’s identity and brand; and

  • Execution of extensive community outreach, as well as responding to and logging constituent requests.

This job is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented to the student’s benefit. To qualify, students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform. However, internships may not require concurrent enrollment if the student is in good standing with the educational institution. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period. Incumbents may deal with sensitive information. Such data is expected to be maintained as private and shared only on a need-to-know basis with other City employees and elsewhere when authorized by the intern’s supervisor.

The ideal candidate must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.

About the Team:

This position is part of the Community and Neighborhoods Department. There is one Director of Transportation, one Deputy Director of Transportation, administrative staff, and five section managers.

Work Schedule:

This position requires 20 hours of work per week. The selected candidate is required to be in the office (cubicle or shared space) for 16 of the 20 hours per week.

Position Salary:

$18.00/hr.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for and/or manage in-person events and neighborhood canvasses.

  • Collect data, review research materials, and determine accuracy, validity of sources, and appropriateness for use.

  • Write copy and take photographs for engagement reports, public outreach materials, email campaigns, social media posts, online interactive tools, website pages, or related material based on research, investigation, or analysis.

  • Create collateral, such as graphics, infographics, and maps, and review material for distribution to the public relevant to the Transportation Division’s needs.

  • Perform community outreach, including responding to incoming constituent requests via phone, social media, email, or other customer resource management (CRM) applications.

  • Log constituent requests within designated asset management databases.

  • Comply with City and department policies and procedures.

  • Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, though internships may not require concurrent enrollment if the student is in good standing with the educational institution.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Good conflict resolution skills are desirable, but not required.

  • Must have good organizational and analytical skills.

  • Must have good computer skills and be proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook; Adobe Creative Cloud apps, including Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop; and various social media platforms.

  • Working knowledge of Salesforce is desirable, but not required.

Working Conditions:

  • Moderate physical activity. Uncomfortable working positions. May have a few disagreeable elements such as the appearance of the workplace, poor ventilation, or uneven temperature.

  • Considerable exposure to stressful situations and stress as a result of human behavior and various responsibilities.

  • Non-traditional working hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required intermittently.
