The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for an individual with strong leadership skills to provide direction and guidance relating to geotechnical design and testing. The Geotechnical Design Manager establishes overall Department geotechnical policies, practices and criteria, and manages Geotechnical Design s coordination with other divisions and disciplines Principal Duties As the Geotechnical Design Manager, you will:

  • Be responsible for the day to day responsibilities of the geotechnical group to support project delivery (for both roadway and structures), maintenance/operations, and emergency response related to geotechnical activities. 
  • Develop, maintain, and modify Department standards, specifications, special provisions, criteria, details, manuals, guidance, and processes related to geotechnical design and construction requirements including quality control expectations, processes, and compliance
  • Establish and maintain requirements for geotechnical project deliverables such as subsurface exploration plans, foundation type recommendations and capacity, identification and characterization of seismic hazards, geotechnical reports, installation and acceptance criteria for deep foundations
  • Identify, develop, and provide relevant geotechnical training needed to support projects and Department goals
  • Oversee site geotechnical/geological reconnaissance, drilling, and laboratory testing
  • Act as a technical authority on projects and provide technical expertise and recommendations to address geotechnical related issues
  • Remain abreast of the key geotechnical issues on individual projects
  • Review advertising packages prior to advertisement for quality, documentation, and constructability
  • Evaluate applicable project change orders and value engineering proposals
  • Participate in asset management efforts
  • Oversee geotechnical/geohazard data collection, management and mitigation
  • Participate in professional organizations related to geotechnical engineering to represent the Department s interests and concerns
  • Manage budgets, direct the use of available manpower within Geotechnical Design, and determine the need for geotechnical contractor and consultant support
  • Direct and oversee the implementation of various design, consultant review, research, and related projects

Minimum Qualifications In order to qualify, the candidate:

  • Must be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • Will have at least four (4) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • Must have a valid driver's license

Preferences Preference may be give to those with a background in geotechnical design, hazards, construction, and/or mitigation. Supplemental Information Here is some additional information of which y ou should be aware:

  • Working conditions and physical requirements are moderate:  This position will involve some field work and the ability to traverse uneven, steep, and rough terrain.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader
