    JOB SUMMARY

Performs complex studies on the distribution and determinants of infectious and chronic diseases and other public health issues. Conducts surveillance activities and investigations of reportable diseases. Collects, manages, and analyzes data to make recommendations for disease prevention and control.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Epidemiology, Public Administration, Health Education, Health Promotion, Community Health, or other closely related field, plus three (3) years of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah is required to drive to various work sites.

It is mandatory that all new hires receive the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Acellular Pertussis) vaccine before beginning employment or provide a copy of their immunization record prior to starting employment. The immunization record must show the vaccine name and date received.

Upon hire, a two-step Tuberculosis skin test will be required. The first will need to be placed prior to starting employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manages active and passive surveillance activities on infectious diseases, environmental health events, public health syndromes, chronic diseases, injuries, and similar issues. Develops conclusions from surveillance data and identifies implications for public health programs.

  • Designs instruments and methods for the collection and analysis of disease-related data. Evaluates usefulness of information collected and makes changes as needed. Communicates key findings from data analysis to policymakers and the public.

  • Conducts epidemiologic studies and leads field investigations to assess risk factors for adverse health outcomes and to determine sources of disease outbreaks, interpret findings, and disseminate recommended prevention and control measures.

  • Utilizes, maintains, and modifies public health databases used to organize and analyze data, ensuring the confidentiality of information.

  • Interprets data using epidemiological methods to describe public health problems, population impacted, and factors contributing to the findings. Provides data to help establish targeted prevention activities and program goals and provides education as needed.

  • Collaborates and serves as a liaison with health care providers, health agencies, and other key partners to identify cases that meet surveillance criteria and obtain information needed for investigations.

  • Receives and follows-up on reports about suspected bio-terrorism.

  • Publishes and/or presents results from research to inform public health professionals and the community.

  • Researches, prepares, and submits grant proposals.

Additional Information

We are seeking an Epidemiologist-Evaluator to lead the evaluation of overdose prevention strategies as part of the CDC-funded Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) initiative. This role focuses on designing and implementing program evaluation plans to assess the effectiveness of interventions such as linkage to care, harm reduction, and clinical practice guidelines. Key responsibilities include developing data collection tools, analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data, and disseminating insights through data dashboards, visualizations, presentations, and reports.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in program evaluation and survey design/analysis, along with a deep understanding of health equity principles. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the OD2A prevention team, as well as community and clinical partners. Success in this position requires excellent interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and effective communication abilities to foster meaningful partnerships.

This is a time-limited position except by law from the rights of a merit employee and work as an at will employee., this position is funded through a cooperative agreement with the CDC, with anticipated end date in August 2028. The position is housed in the Analytics Bureau within the Population Health Division.

We offer a Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule, with hybrid work options and flexible hours.
