Job Description:

This job is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit. To qualify students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period.

About the Position:

Salt Lake City has internship opportunities with our Engineering team! This is an entry-level, hourly position in the GIS series. The intern will perform technical work in address geocoding, computer-aided mapping, a variety of database compilation and maintenance, CAD or other related areas under the supervision of other Engineering GIS staff. This is a technical position requiring knowledge of computer system operations, database systems and computer-aided drafting

Internship will begin Spring 2025. This is a seasonal position, not to exceed 6 months of employment.

About the Team:

The Public Services Engineering Division administers the design and procurement of construction projects funded by the City’s Capital Improvement Program and the Funding Our Future bond. Applicants for roles within the Engineering Division can expect to support projects that improve streets within the public right-of-way, office buildings, bikeways, and sidewalks – all important areas of the City’s growing infrastructure that everyone uses.

Position Salary Range:

$20.00/hr

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collects, compiles, maintains and updates departmental geographic information. Verifies address-related or other database related information through researching existing records and field checks. Conducts quality assurance of the data prepared for entry into geographic information system.

  • Utilizes a variety of input devices for inputting mapping and tabular information into a geographic information system, including coordinate geometry coordinate adjustment software. Interprets maps, parcel plats and survey records to develop map overlays. Prepares basic maps and tabular reports using plotters and other output devices.

  • Provides mapping and departmental GIS related information to other City departments and outside agencies, and assists in interpreting the requested information. May be asked to write technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.

  • Complies with city and department policies and procedures.

  • Other tasks as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, though summer internships may not require concurrent enrollment if student is in good standing with the educational institution.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Must have good organizational and analytical skills.

  • Must have good computer skills.

    Working Conditions:

  • Moderate physical effort, comfortable working conditions, and handling of light weights. Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking may be required. Subject to extended exposure to computer visual display terminals
