The Utah Department of Transportation s (UDOT) Technology & Innovation Division is looking for a highly skilled individual to repair and install crash attenuators throughout the Wasatch Front. This is a specialized crew where you will be expected to be the first call for any crash attenuator repairs. This crew is housed at the Complex in Central Maintenance and will not be part of the Transportation Technician program. Employees will not go back and forth between construction and maintenance and will not be part of the snow plan, therefore not eligible for any on-call pay associated with that program. Principal Duties As the Crash Attenuator Technician, your duties will included:

  • Working in the field to repair and replace crash attenuators
  • Ensuring proper safety protocols are being followed in the field
  • Maintaining manufacturers certifications in installation, maintenance, and repair of UDOT-approved crash attenuators and end treatments
  • Operating and maintaining specialized equipment including but not limited to truck-mounted attenuators, hoists, and punch trucks
  • Performing routine crash attenuator inspections and providing related inspection training to the maintenance stations
  • Ensuring all protective clothing adheres to UDOT s Protective Equipment & Safety Clothing policy (06E-02)

Minimum Qualifications In order to qualify, you must:

  • Have at least three (3) years of related experience
  • Have a Class-A CDL license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days after hire
  • Have the certifications, or be able to obtain within three (3) months of hire, that cover the installation and repair of crash attenuators and end treatments currently approved for use in the state (this list will be updated as new products are approved and others are discontinued). Currently the required certifications are:
    • Road Systems
    • Valtir
    • Hill and Smith
    • Lindsay
  • Be willing and able to travel frequently

Supplemental Information Here is some information you should be aware of:

  • Significant travel required
  • This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire.
  • Working Conditions:  Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or chemicals, etc. This position requires you to frequently be exposed to hazards and discomforts of traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment. 
  • Physical Requirements:  Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Group Leader.
