The University of Utah College of Social Work (College hereafter) invites applications for multiple 9-month tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. The positions include generous benefits, competitive salary, development funding, and a collegial environment. We are especially interested in candidates whose research and/or teaching focuses on gerontology and disabilities, substance use and addiction, or health and behavioral health; however, those with other expertise are encouraged to apply.Experience working with Latinx and/or Indigenous communities is highly desirable, as is being bilingual in Spanish/English. The College seeks faculty whose innovative ideas and research agenda will support students’ transformation of policies, practice, and interventions to alleviate human suffering, enhance well-being, and promote social justice. The candidates selected for these positions will be outstanding scholars and teachers—with a strong scholarly record, external funding agenda, and excellence in teaching consistent with the appropriate rank of faculty appointment they are applying for.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a doctorate in social work or a related field (e.g., Psychology, Public Health, Gerontology, Applied Sociology) by the time of appointment; an MSW degree is strongly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a history of or capacity for a strong record of publications; commitment to preparing research proposals for external funding; record of excellence in teaching; and record of professional and community service. Applicants who are ABD may also apply if successful defense of the dissertation occurs prior to appointment. Successful candidates will have at least two years of full-time, post-master’s professional social work experience, enabling them to teach practice courses. Experience with and/or interest in online education is desirable. Individuals from backgrounds traditionally under-represented in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

The College, established in 1937, is the only institution in the Intermountain West that offers all three degrees in social work: BSW , MSW , and Ph.D. In 2024, U.S. News and World Report ranked the College #36 in the nation, and Academic Analytics ranked the College #13 in the nation for NIH grant funding. The College houses two research centers—the Social Research Institute and the Utah Criminal Justice Center—which provide faculty and students with interdisciplinary, highly impactful research opportunities and support for the development and implementation of funded research projects. Currently, College faculty are leading a number of federally-, state-, and foundation-funded translational research projects to advance social work research and innovate evidence-based practices for vulnerable populations. The College’s Goodwill Humanitarian Building features state-of-the-art clinical training suites equipped with one-way mirrors and audio-visual technology for real-time clinical supervision and feedback.
