Job Summary

The Afterschool Community Outreach Coordinator will coordinate all aspects of a robust and strategic Afterschool Community Outreach Program by: creating and implementing an annual work plan for offsite and onsite afterschool community outreach, including all logistics and tracking for reporting; developing, delivering, and overseeing relevant and engaging community outreach education content, curriculum, and activities in collaboration with Museum departments; investigating and pursuing partnership and outreach opportunities; performing ongoing program evaluation and improvement; and maintaining database of individuals and organizations related to outreach partners. This position may also supervise community outreach volunteers. This position is grant-funded through September 30, 2025, with the possibility of continuing depending on factors such as funding renewal. Responsibilities

The Afterschool Community Outreach Coordinator will:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations by organizing and coordinating offsite and onsite afterschool community outreach opportunities; promoting the Museum’s exhibits and programs, including developing and facilitating STEM -based programming; working directly with partner organizations; and handling logistics.

  • Lead the development, evaluation, and refinement of assigned educational program(s), including curriculum writing, classroom teaching, and supporting materials.

  • Maintain program budget, supplies, and participant communications in a timely manner for afterschool community outreach programming.

  • Recognize and respect differences, and foster collaborations that support connections between Museum exhibitions, collections, and research, and program participants’ lives, perspectives, and experiences to ensure an environment of belonging at NHMU .

  • Develop, foster, and sustain long-term relationships with key community partners; work closely with community partners to better understand community needs for enriched interactions.

  • Establish short- and long-term objectives in collaboration with the Community Programs Manager by identifying key partnership opportunities; leveraging NHMU’s exhibits, collections, research, and programs; prioritizing underrecognized communities; and by maintaining a rotational schedule to visit westside afterschool providers.

  • Maintain records to support and advance the program, including a database of community partners and relevant annual events.

  • Prepare reports by tracking program data, including audience numbers and demographics; assist in establishing protocols for accurate data capture, evaluation, and impact.

  • Conducts evaluation of educational program(s) to identify areas for improvement and initiates appropriate changes.

  • Develop and maintain professional peer contacts with partner organizations and internal staff in order to stay current on educational and scientific information, pursue collaborative opportunities, and contribute to Museum-wide goals.

  • Train and supervise the afterschool community outreach volunteers.

  • May plan and coordinate outreach publicity activities by determining priorities, preparing a business plan, coordinating advertising materials and/or marketing programs to individuals and organizations.

  • Collaborate with other Community Outreach team members and the Collections Registrar’s office to adhere to artifact handling protocols and the Museum’s pest management policies to continuously advance Community Outreach’s efforts to care for artifacts on loan and to clean and inventory supplies.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, ability to travel and occasionally remain overnight as needed for delivering programs statewide, and may require 4-6 hours driving in a single day.

  • Ability to manage/lift up to 50 lbs. and drive a high-roof cargo van or other oversize vehicle. This is an essential function of the job which will involve moving our Traveling Treasures mobile exhibit.

  • Occasionally required to work evenings and weekends as needed for outreach program delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), and two years related experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Preferences

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Experience in developing and teaching formal and/or informal educational programs.

  • Experience coordinating educational program logistics.

  • Experience working with people from different backgrounds.

  • Computer skills, including database and graphics software.

  • Broad knowledge of natural history topics.

  • Ability to speak conversational Spanish and translate interpretive documents into Spanish.
