Who we’re looking for

TRD is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Engineer, Engine Support.

What you’ll be doing

  • Responsible for the correct installation, calibration, operation and maintenance of TRD supplied Race Engines in multiple Racing Series.

  • Maintain and communicate to Race Team personnel, TRD Technical Support Bulletins outlining required methods, procedures and parameters to ensure engines are operated correctly, efficiently and safely at all Test and Race Events.

  • Provide onsite Team race shop support as necessary, to ensure correct engine installation and pre-startup procedures are followed and to validate any changes and new procedures as and when they are introduced.

  • Provide onsite Dyno support at TRD and External Engine Shops as required, to assist with sign-off, performance or durability testing of Race Engines. Responsible for test plans, correct operating procedures, parameters and optimized engine calibration, during all Engine Dyno or Chassis Dyno testing.

  • Attend prioritized Track Test and Race Events for each supported series, including pre-event setup days, when necessary.

  • Prior to Track running, share documentation and verbal communications with Team Personnel and Drivers, pertaining to engine calibration, driver assist strategies and cockpit switch configurations. Adjust settings as required.

  • During on-Track Test or Race sessions (for series with live Telemetry), monitor engine and systems essential parameters, driver switch positions etc. and Pit to Car audio communications. Identify any engine operations outside of defined window and communicate to Race Team Engineer, a corrective action plan.

  • When possible, (for series with EFI and/or Data Logging systems), download Engine data from ECU or Logger after every track outing and analyze for optimal Engine operation and Performance. Modify Engine calibration if required before subsequent track outings. Identify any systems or sensor errors and inform Race Team if changes are needed.

  • For Racing Series that do not have any data recording devices, post-session / event debriefs with the Team & Driver should provide Feedback on engine performance, drivability and reliability. Developing good communications with Team Personnel and Drivers is an important requirement of this position, even when data systems are available.

  • Perform or assist any required troubleshooting of engine & vehicle systems & components, sensors, actuators, wiring etc. when issues arise at the Shop, Dyno or Racetrack.

  • Deliver timely post-event reports to TRD engineering groups for tracking of engine usage and mileage, engine event scheduling, event operating parameter summaries and detailed problem / failure communication. Follow up with applicable TRD departments to complete issue resolutions.

What you bring

  • BS in Engineering is minimum requirement for this position

  • Direct experience in the calibration and tuning of EFI-equipped Internal Combustion Engines is a primary requirement of this position.

  • Experience with current Electronic Engine Management and Data Logging Systems is also a key requirement.

  • A good understanding of the mechanical and electrical components in a modern IC Race Engine and it’s operation.

  • Strong knowledge and experience in problem definition and problem solving.

  • Having previous trackside involvement in a Motorsport environment would be advantageous.

Computer Skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Windows operating system and Microsoft Office apps (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • Experience with production or aftermarket ECU tuning applications such as Bosch, Cosworth, Marelli, McLaren, MoTeC etc.

  • Experience with current Data Analysis software. Examples: Pi Toolbox, McLaren ATLAS, MoTeC i2, Bosch WinDarab, Marelli Wintax etc.

  • Some Experience with CAD software is desirable but not required

Availability for frequent out-of-state travel and weekend work schedules, are key requirements of this position.

Added bonus if you have

  • Specialist knowledge in at least one area of Engine Development

  • Some experience in Race Engine build and maintenance

  • Working knowledge of Performance Engine calibration & tuning

  • Understanding of Electronic Data recording systems

  • Experience analyzing race car and engine data for optimization of vehicle performance

  • Experience working on and troubleshooting complex mechanical and electronic system
