POSITION DESCRIPTION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under minimal supervision, supervises and coordinates animal services, surgery center and animal control

functions. Work varies, requiring interpretative judgment within prescribed standards and procedures.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

o Acts as Animal Services Manager and/or Operations Manager in the absence of the Animal Services

Manager and/or Operations Manager respectively; signs search warrants and issues citations in

accordance with City ordinance.

o Coordinates work schedule for Animal Services Staff and volunteers; approves payroll timesheets; works

with confidential information regarding personnel, operations, and actions within the office.

o Assists with budget preparation and management; oversees daily cash flow and deposits, monitors

expenses; accounts for all fees and donations; coordinates division purchasing.

o Ensures office efficiency by planning and executing equipment procurement, layouts, and office systems.

o Coordinates the development and implementation of office policies by setting up and maintaining

operational procedures and standards; initiates and establishes improvements in methods and procedures.

o Maintains records and compiles reports; handles correspondence; coordinates office mailings; maintains

files and systems.

o Ensures inspections or investigations are in accordance with regulatory agencies.

o Coordinates and maintains the D.E.A. (Drug Enforcement Agency) standards for the handling and

documentation of controlled substances.

o Confers with state and local agencies and officials concerning animal care and control methods,

procedures, and issues.

o Works with the veterinarian to schedule and prepare for surgery; ensures the facility is properly supplied and

ready for surgery which includes drawing up medications for surgery, injections, drawing blood, and

intubation of animals.

o Performs and/or supervises euthanasia as required; investigates potential rabies and other exposures.

o Handles animal control issues as needed and applies the use of force as necessary.

o Encourages, promotes and facilitates adoptions, plans for and coordinates efforts with volunteer

organizations.

o Works variable schedule including evenings and weekends, as needed.

o Performs special projects and overtime as requested; performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:

Helps to supervise animal services staff under the Animal Services Manager and the Operations Manager.

May help oversee volunteer activities as needed under the Animal Services Manager and the Operations

Manager.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:

o High school diploma or G.E.D.

o Module A&B of National Animal Care and Control Association training and current certification in chemical

capture and proven proficiency on euthanasia methods verified and approved by a licensed

veterinarian within six (6) months from start date of employment.

o Two (2) years of experience working as an Animal Control Officer or in a related field.

o Experience working as a veterinary technician is desirable.

o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:

This position has a 40-minute response time by way of the most direct route and within the posted speed limits; or

must live within the city limits of Salina, Bennington, Minneapolis, McPherson, Solomon, Abilene, or Carneiro.
