Actalent Greenhouse Technician in Saint Louis, Missouri

Description:

This position will work closely with laboratory scientists at the St. Louis location to lead the maintenance of sugarcane plants in the greenhouse and provide high quality donor material for genetic transformation. The ideal candidate will actively engage with relevant areas of the company to design, implement and document plant growth practices that optimize plant quality.

This role is responsible for every single plant transplant, hands on plant care, documenting plant physiological data- quality management- paperwork and tracking. Proactive communication is required - if there are any issues with the plants- disease etc they need to make sure the team knows and be able to request help as needed to make sure plants stay alive and healthy as #1 priority. One person running the greenhouse.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning, managing and executing routine greenhouse activities (i.e. planting, watering, trimming, ordering soil and supplies, pest & pathogen monitoring, greenhouse organization and cleaning, etc)

  • Test new growing supplies and medium for enhanced plant growth and quality to ensure robust plant material for successful genetic transformations

  • Ensure a steady supply of high-quality donor material for genetic transformation, working closely with scientists

  • Act as the focal point in the communication and interaction with greenhouse facilities and regulatory agencies such as USDA.

  • Engage with relevant areas in our parent company in Brazil to keep informed of advancements in growth practices.

  • Communicate greenhouse updates with the St. Louis research group in a timely and proactive manner.

  • Follow Quality Management and Stewardship SOPs

  • Maintain excellent records in a detailed and organized manner

  • Prepare basic reports and presentations

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in Horticulture or Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Plant Biology or related subject

Ability and willingness to conduct hands-on activities in the greenhouse is a must (Plant care skills must be demonstrated clearly on resume and where they obtained them (can be academic but must be clear))

Predominantly focused on cultivating plants and seed but will observe some lab practices in training to get an idea of what they are supporting

Ability and willingness to embrace flexibility and to work effectively in a fast-paced environment

Experience in successfully maintaining plants in greenhouse is a must

Experience in working in a tissue culture and transformation laboratory is preferred

Must be able to thrive in a direct-feedback type environment. Also looking for someone who is able to give feedback themselves where warranted and come up with solutions to problems
