The position reports to the Manager of Program Planning & Business Process Support in Advanced Energy Solutions. The Advanced Energy Solutions department develops and implements progressive programs that support SMUD's 2030 Zero Carbon and long-term sustainability goals. This position will support the Planning team by providing data analysis, and/or project support for program planning, budgets, reporting, and initiatives related to our portfolio of programs which can include Electric Transportation, Load Flexibility, Building Electrification, Energy Efficiency and Green Pricing in both the residential and commercial sectors. The student will gain an understanding and exposure to program planning in the utility industry and creation of customer and grid benefit programs that are working to eliminate carbon emissions.

The Zero Carbon Planning Intern will be doing projects and tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Analyzing greenhouse gas analysis of current and potential AES programs as well as researching into potential program models and designs. This analysis is critical for AES to plan the next generation of customer programs that will achieve SMUD's carbon reduction targets.

  • Utilizing a new tool that specialized in calculating the lifecycle carbon impact of SMUD's building and transportation electrification efforts, as well as energy efficiency.

  • Collection data inputs from various internal stakeholders, such as the managers of the programs. Assisting the team in reviewing and inputting data into the tools.

  • Creating and updating a desktop procedure to create a well-documented and replicable calculation process for future-year updates . Calculating the cost effectiveness of programs using various definitions of cost effectiveness

  • Summarizing findings of the carbon benefit of current AES programs

  • Modeling potential 2021-2025 scenarios of new programs or program changes and the corresponding carbon impact Presenting findings to the Market and Product Development team and AES leadership

  • Conducting research that will help AES act upon the analysis and launch new or enhanced programs. Research will likely include several literature reviews that describe the efforts of other utilities related to a specific subject so that SMUD may build upon their lessons learned. This work may require the Zero Carbon Planning Intern to plan and conduct interviews with fellow utility staff.

The Zero Carbon Planning Intern will gain the following from this internship:

  • Industry knowledge: Direct experience and knowledge of the utility industry with emphasis on renewable energy, electric vehicles, and building science

  • Carbon calculation: An understanding of the methodology used to calculate greenhouse gas emissions from customer and utility action

  • Communication skills: Experience preparing and giving presentations to diverse audiences

  • Writing skills: Training and practice in professional writing necessary for reports, memos, and policy/procedure documents

Purpose

Under staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in non-engineering subjects and disciplines.

Nature and Scope

The work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills. This work is distinguished from students engaged in repetitive and easily learned tasks who are employed in the Office Assistant (clerical/technical) classification. Incumbents in the Engineering Student Assistant classification perform at a similar level but are restricted to students majoring in an Engineering curriculum and performing tasks that employ acquired mathematical and science knowledge.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks of an analytical or research nature for suitable projects or ongoing assignments which call for specific acquired academic skills and knowledge.

  • May locate sources of information; collects and organizes data.

  • Makes computations and analyzes data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action.

  • May develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs.

  • May develop written, graphic and/or oral reports.

  • May assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision.

Required Education

Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at a resident academic institution in a declared curriculum that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments.

  • Students must be enrolled as a full-time student, complete and pass at least 12 undergraduate units OR 8 graduate units, and received at least a 2.0 GPA in the previous semester/quarter.
