Please Note: We are posting this opportunity for a Generation Designer III along with a Generation Designer II. The Power Generation Department will be filling only one position at either level. This is an exciting time to join SMUD as key member of the Power Generation Engineering Department. SMUD's Power Generation team is seeking a Generation Designer III familiar with computer aided design (CAD) to support mechanical, electrical, and civil design changes to its various power generating assets and their support facilities. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment where constant coordination with engineers, craft workers, and various support staff personnel is required. This position reports to SMUD's campus near Bradshaw and Kiefer in Sacramento, CA with potential opportunities for hybrid remote work.

Purpose

Under general supervision, designs generation facilities and prepares Design Change Notice (DCN) packages for the construction and maintenance of Power Generation facilities or in conjunction with other field work. Performs all necessary field investigations, drafting, calculations, standards applications, inspections and other design responsibilities associated with the DCN packages. Coordinates with agencies, office and field personnel during the process.

Nature and Scope

This is the independent working level in the Generation Designer classification series assigned to the Power Generation Design function. The Designer III class is differentiated from the Designer II by the complexity of work, task coordination requirements and overall technical difficulty of duties performed. Incumbents in this class must be capable of performing the full range of standardized design for generation facilities and associated facilities and includes coordinating DCN package implementation; performance of these duties may require significant negotiation, scheduling and coordination.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work may include, but is not limited to, the following: (NOTE: While in general all the functions and requirements listed are essential, individual positions and/or locations may not require all duties be performed.)

  • Interprets and applies SMUD rules, regulations, construction and system design standards and other guidelines to develop design alternatives and define work scope.

  • Performs independent field investigations to identify and coordinate design change requirements; verifies proper facility installations by contractors or SMUD field forces consistent with design requirements, safety, and building and construction codes.

  • Schedules and leads meetings with both SMUD and non-SMUD personnel as necessary in the investigation, identification, preparation, implementation, and completion of Design Change Notices (DCNs); interprets DCN packages and associated documents and assists others in doing so.

  • Uses the Geographic Information System (GIS) to create specialized maps of Power Generation facilities; supports vendors and internal customers with data and documentation as needed.

  • Performs a wide range of drafting and graphic assignments necessary to generate electrical, mechanical, civil and structural drawings; creates and modifies drawings using AutoCAD or manual drafting techniques; uses scanning devices/digital cameras to create and modify digital images for use with AutoCAD files and digital viewing/conversion software.

  • Uses SAP to add and update projects, DCNs and documentation information.

  • Performs field surveys and takes measurements in support of reporting and investigational requirements.

  • Applies elements of project management to coordinate work, including work flow analysis, scheduling, resource assignment and budgeting; evaluates and analyzes data and prepares reports.

  • Monitors and maintains the Power Generation data/drawing system, coordinating access/security and utilization requirements for clients of generation data.

Required Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Required Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record not more than two moving violations in the last two years.

Knowledge Of

Electrical or mechanical systems typically used in generation systems; electrical generation facilities design basis and criteria; the functions, authority and practices of outside agencies and other utilities; latest trends in information systems and industry drafting and design techniques; SMUD drawing standards and methods; and, project management, scheduling and budgeting techniques.

Skills To

Use AutoDesk AutoCAD and a wide array of computer applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel; understand, plan and coordinate diverse functions within assigned projects; support work segment goals including procedure development, cost reduction, scheduling support, performance and work tracking, and team motivation and coaching; actively promote consensus building in team problem solving.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in a STEM-related program

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Generation Designer II with SMUD or five (5) years of experience in a design or drafting related position.

  • Prior electrical utility experience

  • Electrical design experience - Familiarity with electrical AC/DC schematics (consisting of ladder logic, single and three line diagrams), equipment wiring drawings, scaled equipment layout diagrams, basic electrical theory, and knowledge of industrial wiring practices.

  • Ability to read, understand, and implement SMUD drafting and design standards

  • Familiarity with construction drawings sets, with ability to navigate through prints to extract basic design information.
