Corewell Health Certified Ophthalmic Technician in Royal Oak, Michigan

Job Summary

The Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) uses ophthalmic techniques to perform preliminary work-ups for patients of the Beaumont Eye Institute physicians. Coordinates patient appointments, with clerical staff and provides clinical support for the Eye Clinic. The COT is also trained in providing fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, external photography, endothelial photography and OCT. Maintains, sorts and labels all instruments. Prepares testing images, to be placed in EMR.

Essential Functions

  • Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular finds accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.

  • Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extra ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assess angles, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including specially tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, and dry eye testing.

  • Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), and optical biometry (IOL Master and Lenstar).

  • Perform retinoscopy and refractometry. Assist with, minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office.

  • Assist with basic contact lens fittings and instruct patients in proper care of, insertion and removal of contact lenses.

  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre and post operative instructions, as directed by physician.

  • Check expiration dates and inventory of culture plates, media, etc., kept in refrigerator and replace, as necessary.

  • Maintain inventory and order diagnostic medications and supplies.

  • Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment and ordering of supplies.

  • Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines.

  • Perform diagnostic procedures, visual fields, ultrasounds, topography, IOL Master, Lenstar, wave scans and color vision testing. Ophthalmic photography including OCT, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, fundus photography and external photography and endothelial cell counts. Helps to maintain all photographic supplies, and medical equipment.

  • Assists with surgical coordinating between physicians, surgical centers and attending staff private office.

Qualifications

  • Required High School Diploma

  • 2-18 months experience as COT Required

  • Ophthalmic Photography experience Preferred

  • CRT-Ophthalmic Technician, Certified (COT) - UNKNOWN Unknown Upon Hire required
