Job Summary and Qualifications

As the Surgical Technologist Extern, you will deliver high-quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services to support the efficient operation of the surgical suite. You will assist the surgical staff in the perioperative process, and consistently assist the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized and safe environment. You will be currently enrolled and in good standing in an approved school of Surgical Technology.

• You will collaborate with the Circulating RN and Surgical Technologist to organize the operating suite with instruments, supplies and equipment needed for the day

• You will review daily cases to ensure adequate stocking

• You will observe proper functioning of equipment and instruments prior to procedures

• You will observe surgical services staff in creating and maintaining an orderly sterile instrument table and utilizing physician preference cards for efficient setup

• You will observe preparing for emergency and add-on cases

• You will assist with providing care and comfort for the patient throughout the perioperative process

• You will transport patients to and from the surgical suite as needed

• You will aide in transferring and positioning patients, observing the prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures

• You will perform and/or assist in the gown and glove process for self and team

• You will observe the surgical team during each procedure, including the passing of instruments, patient monitoring, handling of medications or specimens, and replenishing supplies

• You will observe all sponge, sharp, and instrument counting

• You will assist with room turnover

• You will participate in patient and procedural verification

• You will help maintain a safe, organized environment for personnel and patients

What qualifications you will need:

Education

• High school diploma or GED equivalent – preferred

• Currently enrolled in an approved Surgical Technologist program – required

Licenses and Certifications

• Basic Life Support certification – required

• Complete fundamentals course and one clinical course – preferred
