This position exists to establish programs and services that support the vocational success of English Language Learners (ELL). This involves complex, highly responsible professional work in a specialized field with individuals who are blind, low vision, and DeafBlind in State Services for the Blind’s (SSB) Workforce Development Unit (WDU).

This position will be responsible for leading the English language instruction to adult customers who require these services to successfully complete their individualized plan for employment and career goals. Through a collaborative and coordinated approach, the incumbent will develop and adapt curriculum, provide consultation and English instruction using accessible teaching techniques to support their language skill development and ability to achieve their goals for competitive, integrated employment, independent living, and community integration.

Minimum Qualifications

To receive credit for your education and experience, your resume should clearly describe how you meet each minimum and/or preferred qualification listed, including dates of employment.

Two (2) years* of experience teaching students or adult learners.

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, vocational rehabilitation, or other closely related field as determined by the agency may substitute one (1) year of experience; master’s degree substitutes for eighteen (18) months of experience; PhD substitutes for twenty-four (24) months of experience.

Applicants that meet the above minimum qualification will be further evaluated on the following:

Experience teaching English Language Learners (ELL).

Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.

Incumbent must maintain valid driver's license, & insurance, OR have other reliable transportation. Travel arrangements can be made with drivers employed by State Services for the Blind upon request and depending on availability.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or related degree as determined by the agency.

English as a Second Language (ESL)/ English Language Learner (ELL) accreditation.

Experience working with individuals’ disabilities, including those who are who are blind, low vison, and DeafBlind.

This position requires an Adjustment to Blindness immersion training program. The immersion experience helps new employees understand what’s possible for people who are blind, DeafBlind or visually impaired by allowing them to experience it for themselves. The training takes place at an Adjustment to Blindness training center and can run up to 6-7 weeks.
