Become an Wireless Telecommunications Engineer 3 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll will be in the Network & Telecommunications Services-Wireless Engineering group, and will create network designs to support various wireless networks including ISM-band mesh, VSAT satellite, Land Mobile Radio, unlicensed point-to-point unlicensed, and LTE. SCE leverages these systems for critical business systems including Grid Control, Field Voice Communication, Metering, Demand Management, and Wildfire Risk Mitigation. This position will also assist with the evaluation and introduction of new wireless platforms to meet emerging company use cases.

As a Wireless Telecom Engineer, you will:

  • Evaluate requirements of assigned projects within established telecom communication system standards to meet project and system objectives, considering a wide variety of complex factors such as accessibility, availability of power, and proximity to other SCE facilities.

  • Develop plan of service for projects, including elements such as required communications facilities, facility site location, required systems, etc.

  • Develop project cost and schedule estimates, incorporating complete scope, cost, and schedules conveyed to internal clients and external customers.

  • Create and issue design documentation for assigned projects and oversee execution of designs by implementation resources.

  • Track project delivery including scope, schedule and budget with internal Network & Telecommunication Services, construction service providers, and internal client operating units.

  • Coordinate with vendors, external utilities, governmental agencies, and external clients as required to complete.

  • Mentor junior engineers to foster understanding of wireless engineering principles.

  • Evaluate and operationalize alternative wireless technologies to meet current and future business requirements.

  • Maintain a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practices.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures technical issues and problems are resolved in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner utilizing available resources

  • Supervises, leads, and coordinates work with full time and contract employees in the execution of new technical strategies, equipment or standards.

  • Conducts life cycle assessments for utility infrastructure materials and processes; improves preventive maintenance procedures to decrease overall downtime

  • Conducts risk assessments and implements risk mitigation strategies to ensure the safety and reliability of engineering projects

  • Supports audits and inspections; ensures compliance with relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations

  • Provides engineering and technical expertise and guidance for the identification, analysis and resolution of high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems in engineering

  • Ensures the engineering facility design basis is controlled and design basis documentation is maintained

  • Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating high-impact complex projects

  • Provides support and technical training to junior engineering levels

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in a scientific/technical/math field.

  • Five or more years of experience performing engineering work in operations, production, construction or maintenance environments.

  • Possess a valid Class C Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in relevant Engineering discipline

  • Two or more years of experience in a Telecommunications field.

  • Two or more experience working in telecommunication networks, either in the electrical utility industry, telecom utility industry, or another utility industry.

  • Experience with ISM mesh radio networks, VSAT satellite networks, LTE networks, and land mobile radio systems.

  • Experience with large-scale wireless network deployment.

  • Experience and understanding of electric utilities, telecommunications carriers, or a related field.

  • Experience with hands-on field troubleshooting related to telecom or wireless.

  • Experience with RF (Radio Frequency) systems.

Additional Information

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.  Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • The primary work location for this position is Rosemead. However, the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time at alternate work locations throughout the SCE service territory.

  • Position will require up to 20% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.

  • Relocation does not apply to this position.
