BAE Systems Senior Systems Safety Engineer in Rockville, Maryland

Job Description

BAE Systems has an immediate need for a technically qualified, experienced engineer to serve as a Senior System Safety Engineer for a growing team that provides nuclear weapon system and specialized program safety support for the U.S. Navy s Strategic Systems Program (SSP).

The Senior System Safety Engineer will work closely with a specialized safety team and will interact routinely with the customer partner, workforce, and BAE Systems leadership to ensure successful administration and execution of a mission critical system safety program. In this role, the engineer will also support technical meetings, prepare and present project status reports to senior Navy and Corporate leadership, oversee the development of associated safety documentation, provide technical input to customer deliverables, and oversee the development and maintenance of internal work instructions.

About the position

The Senior System Safety Engineer will be responsible for evaluating and supporting the delivery of technical system safety artifact reviews, utilizing Model Based Safety Risk Management tools and providing technical evaluations in accordance with applicable policy and standards for system level safety artifacts to our government client ensuring the safety of a system with significant global importance.

Key roles and responsibilities:

  1. Develop a close and trusted professional relationship with SSP customers at all levels

  2. Collaborate with a team of technical experts and junior engineers/technicians

  3. Develop and implement System Safety project plans and schedules in accordance with SSP Customer objectives and priorities

  4. Ensure all responsible projects are executed within approved program management processes and contractual requirements

  5. Inform internal program managers and technical leaders about technical and programmatic risks and opportunities

  6. Execute nuclear safety program management and lifecycle processes

  7. Coordinate with stakeholders, including Government personnel, contractors, and vendors, to ensure effective communication and collaboration

  8. Identify hazards, assess and mitigate risk and communicate nuclear weapon system safety risk management and mitigation strategies.

  9. Leverage Model Based Systems Engineering at various design phases of a program to facilitate in identification of potential hazards within a system for early risk mitigation

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

Minimum education and years of related/relevant experience required: Bachelor s Degree in applicable field and at least 4 to 6 years related work experience or a Master s Degree and 2 to 4 years of related work experience.

Additional skills/experience required:

  • Exceptional verbal, written and presentation communication skills

  • Ability to manage programmatic schedules and drive performance to meet contract deliverables

  • Understand nuclear weapon system safety and command safety policy and requirements

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Significant experience within the U.S. Navy s Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Office, and the Trident II D5 Strategic Weapon System (SWS)

  • Demonstrated ability to grow program area

  • Experience with the development and execution of Model Based Systems Engineering practices

  • Models Based Systems Engineering certificate

  • Advanced Nuclear Weapons Surety certificate

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $92290 - $156860

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
