Job Description Summary

Nazareth University in Rochester, NY invites applications for a .5 (half-time position) Visiting Assistant Professor to expand a thriving undergraduate program in Dance, position starting August 2024. Candidates should have a record of professional experience as a researcher, performer and/or choreographer, and should also demonstrate successful college-level teaching experience in dance.

Primary responsibilities will include instruction of technique, choreography for and artistic direction of faculty/student productions, and teaching Dance theory classes (in candidate’s area of expertise, which could include Choreography, Dance & Collaboration, Dance History, Dance & Culture, Dance Pedagogy, Laban, Senior Seminar, etc.). Teaching duties will include forms of dance specialty (i.e. Jazz, Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, Afro-Diasporic forms, Social/Ballroom, Tap, etc.), and Special topics courses. Additional responsibilities will include advising current students, recruiting high-quality students locally and regionally, establishing or building mutually beneficial relationships and internships with professional and community Dance programs and schools, maintaining ongoing research and professional development in the field of Dance, and exhibiting a collegial spirit in collaborating with music, dance and theatre faculty to produce inter-departmental concerts and productions that advance the mission of the school.

Required Education

MFA or PhD, preferred, MA in Dance acceptable

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A commitment to teaching in a liberal arts environment is essential. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the University’s mission, of teaching the whole student, by integrating performance and creative skills with a theoretical and liberal arts grounding.

Other necessary skill-sets:

  • Mastery in and Practice based in Contemporary forms of technique and/or pedagogical approaches, (preferably with a Release, Anatomical, or Somatic background)

  • Professional experience in Choreography and/or Performance

  • Dance Theory (expertise/ability to teach at least 1-2 of these courses: Dance History, Dance & Culture, Dance Pedagogy, Choreography, Dance & Collaboration, Dance & Community, Senior Seminar

    Preferred Qualifications

We will give preference to applicants with an MFA or PhD, or perhaps an MA, with a specialization in Dance, Dance Studies, Dance Pedagogy, and/or Choreography/Performance, and experience teaching in a higher education institution.
