University of Rochester Research Technician III in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs complex laboratory assignments, planning and conducting experiments that are a portion of larger projects aimed at understanding B cell dysregulation in autoimmune disease under the direct supervision of the PI and senior researchers. The technician will use protocols for cell purification, storage, culture, flow cytometry, RNA or DNA extraction, histology, ELISA, and quantitative RT-PCR. Assists with tasks associated with research activities and lab support for others including more senior technicians, such as sample preparation, data collection, organization and maintenance of biospecimens/repositories, and ordering supplies.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Histology. Assist senior technician with acquiring samples, processing sections, keeping track of and organizing histology samples including with consortium collaborators. Produces data tables and figures for research papers and presentation.

  • Flow cytometry. Plan and execute sample collection, preparation, and flow cytometry following provided protocol. Make recommendations regarding Modifying/revising protocol as needed with Sr. Researcher. Utilize flow cytometry core facility for multi-parameter flow cytometric data collection. Performs moderate to complex analysis and calculation of data; interprets

  • and makes recommendations. Produces data tables and figures for research papers and presentation.

  • In vitro work. Help with cell culture by changing media, passaging cells, and checking cell culture equipment operation. Set up human cell culture experiments using sterile technique and biochemical safety hood. Let Sr. technician know if any of the cell culture equipment is not operating properly.

  • Assist in sample processing with other laboratory personnel. Interface with Biological Specimen Inventory System to assist in inventory management.

  • Genotyping. Assist with planning and performing genotyping of animal colonies. Genotyping will be done by using techniques requiring a high degree of skill and training such as tissue digestion, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cryo-embedding of tissue samples, and fluorescence imaging of histology slides. Communicate with either the PI or Sr. Researcher in the lab the results. Help with managing the animal colony as needed.

  • Lab maintenance and Equipment. Assist in the management of the laboratory supplies. Autoclave lab items as needed. General lab upkeep. Ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety and Training for Research Laboratory Personnel. Assist senior technician in overseeing equipment maintenance (including centrifuges, incubators, tissue culture hoods, PCR machines, plate reader, and micropipettes) and training individuals in use of equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED required;

  • Associates degree in Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or other science related field of study preferred.

  • 5 years of experience with performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities; compiling and collecting data and preparing reports required.

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication preferred.

  • Previous experience with animal work, histology, flow cytometry, and/or biochemistry is preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $21.36 - $29.90 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
