University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

This research position is in the laboratory of Dr. Wright in the Department of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases). The laboratory studies innate and adaptive pulmonary immune responses, with a focus on the genetic basis of susceptibility to opportunistic respiratory infections. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: ordering and preparation of lab materials and reagents, organization of the laboratory, preparation and staining of cells for flow cytometry, genomic DNA isolation and other basic molecular and cell biology techniques as indicated for given experiments. Assistance with maintenance of a mouse colony will also be part of the candidate’s responsibilities. The candidate will work independently but under the guidance of the PI, and will have the opportunity to organize and troubleshoot experiments to the extent of his/her ability. Participation in regularly scheduled lab meetings is required.

SUPERVISION :

This position reports to Terry Wright, Ph.D.

TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

To provide technical support and execution of experiments. Specific duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Tissue culture.

  2. Maintenance and genotyping of transgenic mice.

  3. Molecular and cell biology techniques: isolation of RNA and DNA for PCR, qPCR and genomics analyses.

  4. General lab maintenance including ordering and organization, and adherence to lab regulatory policies.

  5. Participate in regular lab meetings, and regular meetings with Dr. Wright.

  6. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • BA/BS degree in the biological sciences is preferred. Prior laboratory experience and familiarity with general biological techniques - making solutions/buffers, sterile techniques, cell culture methods, and basic molecular biology techniques is desired. Candidate must have excellent command of oral and written English language, strong interpersonal skills, and be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are necessary. Candidate should be highly organized and detail/documentation oriented.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Laboratory duties will require working in a modern biomedical research facility in the vicinity of properly contained chemical and biological materials.

  2. All procedures and facilities conform to federal, local and institutional safety and ethical guidelines.

  3. Full time, 40 hours/week. Standard daytime hours are expected but will vary depending on needs of the lab. Occasional night and weekend hours may be required

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 16.49 - $ 23.08 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
