The referenced pay range represents the first and last step pay rates for this job, as set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Individual pay will be set in accordance with terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Performs advanced levels of locksmith work with minimal supervision using independent judgment frequently.

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

Installs, repairs and maintains all types of locks and cuts keys in accordance with diagrams and manufacturers' specifications, using hand and power tools and precision measuring instruments and equipment. Performs advanced levels of locksmith work with minimal supervision using independent judgment frequently.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:

No formal supervision is exercised. May direct efforts of Locksmith B.

MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Locks, keys, lockpicking tools, key cutting machines and hand and power tools.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Answers all types of trouble calls involving locks, keys and combinations. Observes lock action by feel, sight and sound to determine cause of trouble. Provides appropriate solution.

  • Dismantles all types of locks to gain access to and remove defective parts. Repairs or replaces defective parts. Cleans, assembles, lubricates and installs locks and adjusts functional parts. Examines own work and operates locks to test their performance.

  • Makes keys by cutting blanks using duplicate key or key code and key cutting machines. Occasionally makes obsolete and nonstandard keys and blanks.

  • May set up and operate lathe, mill, drill press, grinder, or other machinery to make and repair parts.

  • Keeps records of locks and keys showing some or all of the following: type, model number, location, date of installation, extent of servicing, key code or combination and to whom issued. Assures the security of all keys, key codes and combinations.

  • May specialize in a major phase of locksmithing such as handling all combination locks or preparing master and submaster lock sets.

  • Maintains stock of a variety of locks, parts, keys, blanks and other supplies. Initiates requests for stock items, tools, equipment, prints and specifications.

  • Keeps up with state of art through periodicals, workshops, self study, etc.

  • Keeps machines, tools and work area in good condition. Performs other duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School education or equivalent and 2-4 years of training and experience in locksmith or related work, preferably in the department
