Cornell Cooperative Extension Horticulture Resource Educator - Rochester, NY in Rochester, New York

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County has an opening for a full-time Horticulture Educator in the Rochester NY office.

The Horticulture Resource Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Monroe County is responsible for providing leadership in the assessment, development, planning, delivery, and evaluation of horticulture educational programming as well as administrative direction, management, and coordination of programming efforts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Master’s Degree in horticulture or related discipline relevant to the role of the position.• Experience relevant to the role of the position.• Knowledge of the principles, theory, research, and application of subject matter appropriate to area of horticulture.• Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.• Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.• Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.• Experience with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel.• Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional methods as well as electronic technology.• Demonstrated experience in effective supervision and management.• Demonstrated experience and ability to work independently and as part of a team with internal and external partners at multiple levels within organizations and across communities.• Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, and evaluate informal education programs for diverse audiences. • Ability to effectively lead, manage, and participate in professional team efforts and highly functioning work teams. • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community, professional leaders, and clientele groups.• Ability to identify and make use of program resources within the community and to establish a leadership role within the community and association.• Ability to identify and secure funding that supports programs, including grant writing, developing public and private partnerships.• Ability and willingness to work with a high degree of integrity, accuracy, organization, sound professional judgment, and the ability to handle confidential, sensitive information.• Ability to organize, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks, deadlines, requirements, and priorities to complete work in a timely manner and within established deadlines.• Ability to work in a typical office environment which may include lifting, moving, and/or transporting office supplies, work related materials, and equipment with or without accommodation. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Two years professional or volunteer relevant to the role of the position.• Experience and background in plant pathology, integrated pest management and/or entomology.• Background or course work in leadership, management, education, and/or grant writing/management.• Experience and/or background with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.• Experience in identifying, guiding, and collaborating with volunteers. • Ability to generate a credible media presence in the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Program Assessment – 15% • Develop program needs assessment.• Apply subject matter knowledge to identify needs, gaps, and trends in the community. • Make recommendations for programmatic offerings, enhancements, and/or improvements based upon assessment. • Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty/program units, and other Land Grant Universities as appropriate, for program assessment guidance related to horticulture programming efforts.• Ensure program assessment is aligned within the scope of local and statewide Plan of Work

Program Development – 20% • Apply subject matter expertise to develop high quality educational programs and materials to address the needs of the program and program participants in the horticulture area using proven educational methodologies as well as innovative techniques to reach diverse target populations within the community and region.• Develop horticulture educational programming to meet identified needs and diverse interests of participants and volunteers.• Determine program priorities and identify activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.• Research, identify, and select appropriate educational and community resources and identify additional resources required for new programs and initiatives.• Ensure that program development and related activities are within scope of the Association Plan of Work and are within the mission of Cornell Cooperative Extension.• Based on program evaluation data, formulate, and implement specific strategies to improve overall program quality, deliverables and impact and meet the need of diverse program participants. • Develop relationships with partner agencies, organizations, industries, community leaders and other stakeholders to obtain their assistance in program development and ensure that stakeholders are engaged in the program development process.• Maintain direct connection with Cornell University faculty and other Land Grant Universities as appropriate, for guidance in program development.• Participate in multidisciplinary and multi-­association team efforts to develop programs to address priority issues as appropriate.

Program Delivery – 20% • Deliver innovative, high quality horticulture education programs and events that address identified programming priorities utilizing a variety of teaching methods, including formal and informal workshops, seminars, social and mass media consistent with identified educational needs. • Provide subject matter resource and information related to management of plant, insect, and disease problems; horticulture, entomology, and plant pathology; structural pests and ticks.• Serve as subject matter expert in the area of horticulture and diagnostic lab for staff, volunteers, participants, community organizations, general public and professionals working within the county and the region. • Consult and utilize target audiences/stakeholders, collaborators, organizations, agencies, government, and other key partners in program delivery efforts.• Foster acceptance of programs, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.• Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty, program units and other Land Grant Universities as appropriate for program delivery guidance.• Ensure program delivery is within the scope of the statewide and Association Plan of Work.• Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

Program Evaluation – 10% • Develop program evaluation framework and tools based on subject matter knowledge, within the scope of the statewide Association Plan of Work.• Interact with program participants, the community, Cornell faculty, and staff to collect evaluation data for improving programs.• Analyze and evaluate collected program evaluation data • Communicate outcomes to the Executive Director, leadership team, Board, program advisory committee, Cornell faculty, county, and community leaders. • Recommend program changes to strengthen and improve programs.• Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty and program units for program evaluation guidance.

Applied Research – 5% • Collaborate in the applied research process in conjunction with Cornell University faculty as identified and opportunities become available to design, create, or implement applied research collection framework.• Collect and process soil, plant, and insect diagnostic lab samples.• Ensure applied research is within scope of the statewide and Association Plan of Work.• Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty and program units for guidance in applied research.• Communicate social and economic changes to Cornell University Specialists that may be studied and/or acted upon.

Administrative Direction – 10% • Provide complex administrative tasks to support the planning of educational programs through the interpretation of Association and Cornell program direction.• Provide leadership to the planning of the delivery of horticulture educational programs in order to efficiently meet established program goals. • Provide leadership in budget development, budget implementation and fiscal management of the horticulture educational program area.• With the guidance of the Supervisor, initiate and develop grant or other funding proposals to secure additional funding, actively involving Executive Director, Committees, Board of Directors, Cornell faculty and Extension Administration as appropriate.• Assist in the design of a system of ongoing involvement of citizens which expresses the demographics of the community.• Propose program area budgets based on established financial guidelines or procedures and by anticipating expenses.• Assist in developing relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, industries, and community leaders for program/function.• Provide leadership in budget development for the horticulture program area.• Provide leadership for the development of staffing plans that support educational programming efforts.• Plan effective strategic external and internal communication and marketing efforts to reach target audiences and meet program objectives through public relation initiatives including networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational and community organizations. • Plan promotion of public events and programs including, but not limited to, assisting with mass media efforts related to upcoming events and programs.

Administrative Management – 10% • Assist supervisor in administrative and program management activities, as assigned.• Oversee the management of educational strategies to meet the needs of the community and identified objectives of the program.• Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the operation of the unit, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.• Identifying activities and resources needed to carry out program priorities and goals in consultation and collaboration with supervisor, advisory committees, staff, agency partners, and other key community constituents.• Monitor program to ensure compliance with policies and objectives of the Association, funding requirements, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/Plan of Work.• Monitor program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/plan of work.• Effectively manage program budget allocations. • Assist in the procurement of grant funds for program development and expansion. • Ensure grant funding and reporting requirements are met.• Provide leadership and supervision for assigned staff by coaching, supporting, and providing feedback to enable staff to achieve program objectives and meet the needs of constituents. • Identify, develop, enhance, and engage networks of volunteers and volunteer leaders.• Ensure volunteer direction and management procedures are followed according to established policies and procedures (VIP) by providing guidance, leadership and resources for volunteers and volunteer leaders including recruitment, screening, orientation, training, evaluation, and management.

Administrative Coordination/Operation – 5% • Provide administrative support for program design and for the implementation of the assessment, development, delivery, and evaluation of established educational program goals.• Compile and prepare presentation materials necessary for program delivery.• Coordinate program implementation activities and planning efforts with program staff.• Collect program needs assessment data based on existing framework.• Provide administrative support to accomplish financial goals within assigned program/function, including submission of grant and funding proposals.• Complete required financial documentation to meet grant, contract, and Association finance management requirements. • Complete grant and funding proposals to sustain and grow horticulture program areas.• Coordinate and utilize effective marketing and communication strategies in the promotion of horticulture programming to include, but not limited to, print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiatives.• Maintain communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as newsletters, e-mails, social media, website postings and content.• Provide leadership to develop program staffing plan.• Contribute to the preparation of reports for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others, as necessary.• Actively serve on appropriate regional, state, and national committees and task forces that support overall educational and organizational efforts of the Cornell Cooperative Extension system.• Prepare and submit required reports, including impact statements and success stories, related programming activities and accomplishments to communicate results to appropriate stakeholders.• Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations, and businesses to facilitate continued programming efforts. • Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others, as necessary.• Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures. • Maintain confidentiality of participant information and data collected.• Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested.• This position requires the transport of self and/or program materials/resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned – 5% • In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.• Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. • Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.• Carry out assignments and other duties as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to local fairs, community activities, etc. • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.• Maintain Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.

POSITION DETAILS

  • Full-time, exempt position, scheduled to work 40 hours per week.

  • Based from the Rochester, NY office.

  • May be eligible for hybrid work (in-office/ remote) consideration after employment period of 3 months and based on successfully meeting performance objectives.


COMPENSATION and BENEFITS

$58,500 to $59,500 annualized commensurate with knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities.
