Responsibilities

Location : Mary Brigh MN (MBMNED), Emergency Department/Trauma Center

New Graduates applying to the ED should have the following experience: Nursing school clinical capstone/internship experience within the ED setting (90-120+ hours preferred), ED employment experience (i.e. PCA, Nurse Tech, ED Tech). EMS/Paramedic experience, or Military medical experience.

The New Graduate Pathway Program is designed to support a successful transition from novice to proficient ED Nurse. Participants in this program will orient and work on an inpatient medical/surgical acute care work unit for 12 months prior to participating in a comprehensive orientation process specific to the ED . Elements of ED orientation will be built into your time within the inpatient environment with a focus on developing skills fundamental to that of an ED RN such as:

  • Nursing assessment

  • Time management/prioritization

  • Professional communication and interaction with members of multidisciplinary team

  • Mayo Clinic policy/procedure

  • Critical thinking

  • Emotional intelligence

Participation in the New Graduate Pathway Program will ensure a well-rounded orientation process that will prepare you for the fast-paced and high acuity environment of the Emergency Department.

Patient Care Type : The Emergency Department is a primary tertiary referral facility. In partnership with various clinical practice groups, the ED is a recognized Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center and VAD Center. ED staff see a diverse population of approximately 82,000 patients per year. ED nursing staff interact with nearly every specialty in the medical center with conditions ranging from minor illnesses to life-threatening diseases and injuries. The ED acute care rooms are universal rooms for any acuity or type of patient. The ED is divided into pods, which are named based on geographic locations in the ED. In addition to the universal room pods, and additional pods, there are additional pods to support Behavioral Health, Pediatrics, and Observation practices. There are adult and pediatric resuscitation suites that can accommodate 7 patients. The garage entrance provides support for decontamination processes for patients exposed to hazardous materials.

  • 4 Intake Rooms are available for initial assessment.

  • Center, East, West, and Peds pods are universal acute care rooms.

  • South Pod is for Behavioral health patients.

  • North Pod is for ED Observation Status and is available for patients needing less than 24 hours of observation.

Bed number available : 69 acute care rooms, 1 Eye Room, 7 Resuscitation Bays

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.

Qualifications

Student or graduate of an accredited, or those in the candidacy process, associate, or diploma nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is required.

All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020 and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.

All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.

One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.

Current RN license by applicable state requirements.

Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers - certificate of course completion required and must not expire within 3 months after start date. A scanned copy of the certificate of completion or transcripts, including your full name, must be attached to your profile to be considered.   • American Heart Association (Title: BLS for Healthcare Providers or BLS Provider)

  • Red Cross (Title: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers or BLS for Healthcare Providers)

Compensation Detail

Minimum hourly pay is $39.84. Mayo Clinic has an innovative nursing compensation model that rewards for experience, education, and dedication to the organization.
